Exceptional academic look at love
By J. Standre
This book is a compilation of 16 academic papers discussing such things as love styles (types), compatibility, relationship maintenance and, well, all aspects of love! Varying ideas on intimacy, passion, and commitment and how they relate to the love relationship. These are academic papers, so expect them to be written to a college level audience (one of the toughest reads was also one of the best papers, in my opinion). Authors were mostly professors from top universities (e.g., Harvard, Yale, Brandeis, etc.), along with one psychotherapist. All papers are fully referenced. Also included, of course, is a full index for quick referencing. This was an exceptional look at love from a quantative (as well as qualitative) standpoint. As hard as it is to quantify something as touchy-feely as love, this book does quite the job. Anyone who desires an understanding of the dynamics of love would enjoy this book. I found it to be a pretty quick read and both interesting and informative.

A Sophisticated treatment of a Familiar Topic
By Herbert L Calhoun
Given that psychology itself would seem incomplete if serious psychologists did not prove that they at least understood this most basic engine of human emotions, interactions and activity, these 16 authors seem to have taken up this state of incompleteness as a professional challenge for themselves.

After having perused more than a dozen self-help and pop psychology books on the topic myself, this book is one of the first (and still few) serious studies of the topic of love, per se. Almost 25 years old now, we find here lots of new insights and more than just a few surprises. For instance, it attempts to grapple with the definition of love: Is it an attitude, an emotion, a set of behaviors? Is it an individual orientation or a dyadic bond? How does it differ from infatuation or just pure sexual attraction, or mere lush? How is it best categorized as a psychological phenomenon? What are its connection to evolution and biology? What is its anatomy? How do we maintain it? And perhaps most important of all, how do we properly engage in it passionately? In short, much to my surprise, this edited volume attempts to answer these and other questions; and in the process of doing so, exposes a whole new world and study of the psychology of, and theories about love, theories of which, as it turns out, are an altogether quite robust field of psychological enquiry in itself.

Before this, the book by Ayn Rand's boyfriend, Nathaniel Braden called "The Psychology of Romantic Love," and Eric Fromm's seminal, "The Art of Loving," had been my favorite guides to the topic. As none of the contributors cited either of these two authors (although Fromm's was mentioned, in passing, in the introduction), one must assume that the theories and topics covered in those two books do not exactly overlap with the deeper psychological treatment provided here. The appeal here is much more serious and focussed much more on the theoretical "whys" of love: Their origins, the practices of love across cultures and across time; its taboos as well as what are considered its abnormal practices The biography is academic as opposed to being just pop psychology.

In short, they have provided us with the missing link in psychology: the psychology of love. And in this task, it must be said that they have done more than just an admirable job. Four Stars

The Psychology of Love
By: Robert J. Sternberg and Michael L. Barnes

You might ask yourself the question that most people ask themselves, what is love? I sure know I do. I am sure that there is a large majority of people trying to figure that question out also. How do you know you are in love? Is it the right person to be in love with? Will our love last? Can I trust this person? These are some of the questions that one can ask themselves when in love or finding themselves falling in love. Trying to find the answers to these questions might not be the easiest task so these two authors put together a book to try and help you figure it out.

The authors of the book "The Psychology of Love" by Robert J. Sternberg and Michael L. Barnes go into depth of the theories behind love. The analysis of ones loves, what the authors are trying to capture in the reader's attention is by telling them the reasoning, theories, and analysis behind what every human being strives for "love". In the first part of this book it is simply an introduction about the theory behind love. The second part of this book contains seven chapters about the global theory or love. The third part of this book contains three chapters emphasizing theories of love and relationship maintenance. Lastly the fourth part of this book includes one last chapter that provides a critical overview of the field of love research.

You can say that these authors did their best to get their idea of love across to their readers but really at the end of the day does every person's love life follow everyone else's? Couldn't my love story be totally different than yours? What I am primarily trying to say is that even though the authors did a great job in conveying the books idea, one can make their own love story differently. Psychologists can examine and experiment with many things and tell people solid facts about something's, but in reality is love something that can be experimented with? Love to me is not like science so you cannot find some sort of solution or theory behind it. Love just happens.

Of course this book was a great book to pick up and read. The authors wrote about things that were very interesting to me, and I would have never thought of those ideas on my own. It is always a good idea to get a couple opinions about topics in life, and love is one of them. So to the question that did this book get their message across clearly, yes. This book is definitely worth picking up and reading. You can really see how the outsiders view things that are happening in your personal life and can totally help you with it.

This book holds a great deal of value because it is telling their readers about something very personal. It is not just a book about a type of sport, place, or hobby. This book analyzes in depth people's lives and how two people connect with each other. I would say that any person to pick up this book can get some sort of enjoyment and help out if it.

All in all I would recommend this book to someone who is having trouble with their love life, or for example a teenager that is growing up and needs some advice on the theory behind love. I appreciate the authors that took their time to experiment and research about love to help people like me solve everyday problems.
