1998 marks is the 35th anniversary of A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle. To celebrate, Bantam Doubleday Dell is publishing two wonderful new editions of L'Engle's Time Quartet, including A Wrinkle in Time; A Wind in The Door; A Swiftly Tilting Planet; and Many Waters.
In both the new digest and the mass market editions, each title includes a new introduction by the author. Covers of the digest editions are illustrated by Caldecott Honor illustrator Peter Ss, and the mass market edition covers are illustrated by renowned science fiction and fantasy illustrator Cliff Nielsen.

Review of A Wrinkle in Time

This book was written over 50 years ago, but its subject matter, conformity and fitting in, are still relevant today. The genre is young adult science fiction and deals with an evil entity that attempts to control the lives of people on planets, forcing them to conform so that everyone has a role that they must never step out of, and there is danger in independent thinking. The three main characters, Meg, her little brother Charles Wallace, and Meg's friend from high school are all outsiders: Meg because she is bright but not attractive and doesn't fit with others at her school; Charles Wallace because he has the ability to read how other people feel and what they think, and Calvin because he also has a form of telepathy, is bright, but comes from a poor, uneducated family where he doesn't fit it.
Meg, her brother, and Calvin are pulled into the struggle against the "darkness" by three odd, otherworldly characters who also help them save the father who is being held captive on a dark planet.
The book is suspenseful and the characters well depicted.

I really enjoyed this book

I really enjoyed this book. I read this as a child, but I do not remember it, so returning to it as an adult was fun. I enjoyed the themes and messages of love, and the quirkiness of the characters. They aren't your typical hero- types, but some of the behind the scenes blend-into-the-background types. I think this would be a great book for kids and teachers to use. Obviously a classic.
