The best Government/Citizenship book out there

Ever tried reading a government book? What are they talking about? Not his book!! Short--90 pages or so of easy reading and a quick reference for any citizen. Great for High School Government or Citizenship course. Great for people who aren't citizens and want to learn how the U. S. 'works'. It is in question and answer format, so perfect for those seeking citizenship, too. All you need to know in this small, easy, handy book! Government doesn't have to be complicated or difficult...

Being ashamed I would not pass the Citizenship test and I was born here. I wanted to be prepared when I need to put people on blast saying it is easy. I don't know anyone else who was born here that could past this test. A friend of mine called me out and she was right I need to study my countries basic. OUCH

Nice test prep

This is an indispensable booklet to use as a test prep for the citizenship test. Didn't really cost that much but was surprised to find it in the local library. Check your local library first before buying but overall a good buy.

Haunting look into another culture

Wow. A pause while I catch my breath...
Edwidge Danticat has written an exceptional and beautifully crafted novel about a young Haitian girl and the family of women that surround her. A somber, spiritual story told with a feverish tenacity that will bewitch you and leave you aching for more from this talented and gifted writer.
After twelve years of being raised in Haiti by her aunt Atie, young Sophie Caco has been summoned by her mother to join her in New York. Sophie is terrified and does not want to go, especially since she does not remember her mother, who left Haiti when Sophie was just a baby. What follows is a painful rendering of horrifying secrets and Haitian tradition that deeply affects Sophie and the way she lives her life. Finally, frantic for justification and healing, Sophie turns to her homeland for the answers and refuge she so desperately needs.
The flow of the writing is smooth and lyrical, like music that rolls off the tongue. There is just enough description to make vivid pictures, but not too much to overwhelm. I do find it lacking in the development of the relationship between Sophie and her mother, although not enough to interrupt the beauty and quality of the story. Readers will be awed at the strong determination of the Caco women and the unbreakable bonds that hold them together. A very poetic and powerful novel that mixes a family, their culture, and a country in the midst of political upheaval. Breath, Eyes, Memory is extraordinary.

you lost me

This is less a novel than a string of episodes from a young Haitian woman's life and I enjoyed the first two sections, but was really disappointed as the writer lost control of her text in the later stages. The story starts in Haiti where twelve year old Sophie has been raised by her aunt, Tante Atie, while her mother supports the family with a job in New York. But now her mother wants Sophie to come and join her. There's a beautifully detailed portrait of country life in Haiti here and the separation of Sophie and Atie is genuinely heart rending.
The next section details the tentative first steps of Sophie and her mother as they feel out the parameters of a mother-daughter relationship. This is complicated by the fact that Sophie was the product of her mother being raped as a teenager by a Tonton Macout.
This transition from Haiti to New York is fine and would be a solid basis for a novel, but Danticat now starts skipping forward in large chunks of time. Suddenly, Sophie is 18 and enamored of an older neighbor who is a musician. Her scandalized mother begins to probe her nightly to establish that she has maintained her virginity. Tempers explode and we skip ahead again. Sophie has married the musician and had a child, but she's estranged from her mother, has developed sexual phobias and has fled to Haiti with her child. From here the novel descends into all the worst topicality of the 90's and we see how it made Oprah's Book Club. We're immersed in bulimia, sexual dysfunction, female genital mutilation, therapy, suicide, etc.
Ultimately, after a strong and promising beginning, I have to say that the author lost me. I appreciated the opportunity to be exposed to a side of Haitian life that we rarely see, but then we're buried in a blizzard of psychoblither. I expect to see better from this author in the future.

Promising start leads to disappointment.

I truly enjoyed the first third of this book. Edwidge Danticat is a talented writer whose lyrical prose effectively transports the reader into the rhythms Haitian life. The imagery is powerful and can be profoundly moving. Unfortunately, I found that this promising start was irrevocably marred by the overblown ending. Issues that Danticat addresses in the last half of the book include rape, sexual abuse, bulimia, abortion and breast cancer. Any one or even two of these issues would have given the story the dramatic punch the author was looking for. Two very marginal characters - one with genital mutilation and one with a history of incest - read like they were added to the story just to cover all the bases of female degredation. There are so many ingredients in this stew of suffering that the reader is unable feel completely sympathetic to the victim of any one. My predominant response to this book was disappointment that it didn't live up to its promising beginning.

BRILLIANT open-ended exploration linked through multiple books

I am delighted to see this series back in print! This book series evokes the same feeling in me as do sandbox-style computer games like Morrowind or Oblivion--done with captivating descriptions and an enchanting storyline. Of all the gamebooks I've played, I find this series the most rewarding. Feels much, much more like a WORLD than a regular choose your own adventure book or other gamebooks do. (If anything, its combined text format and vast openness of play echo the good old days of text adventure games from Infocom like Zork and Enchanter.) I'm buying multiple copies as gifts for friends this Christmas to help ensure that all twelve books come out!

It's like an MMORPG in a book

I'm glad to see the Fabled Lands series in re-print. With eBay as my primary expensive source of replacement for my over-used, drink-stained, eraser-ridden, original copies, I became hesitant to open up my old books. Now that they are back, I didn't hesitate to scarf them up off of Amazon.

This book series really shines when you have more than one, since they are all connected areas of the same world. It is much more than any typical "Choose Your Own Adventure" book in that you are free to roam the world at your leisure. There aren't many gamebooks that fit this bill. Tunnels & Trolls solitaire adventures are the closest I can recall. Completing quests, leveling up, finding treasure, hunting monsters, getting rich with trade, arranging a resurrection (i.e. respawn/binding point), and changing the local plot hooks make the Fable Lands feel like an MMORPG in a book.

One of the great things about this first book is that it already presents you with quite a lot of quests that can be completed without any of the other books, and at least one of these is directly related to the future of that land. It's also a fairly sizable kingdom to explore that won't always instantly kill your character out right, though this could still happen. A great introduction to the series that gives you plenty to do and experience in all areas of gameplay. The replay value is extremely high since there are multiple character classes to play, each having their own unique quest, and there are so many events and locations that could be missed whether your character dies or not. This book is really inexpensive, so I recommend buying the rest of the series when they become available.

A chance to collect all the books!

I remember back as a teenager my brother and I were spending a couple of weeks in Ireland with our mother's family. In a book store we were all offered the chance to choose one book each. My brother and I both chose volumes 1 and 2 of the "Fabled Lands" series. It was both a wonderful and a poor choice. Wonderful because Patrick and I spent the next couple of days glued to the couch with pencils and dice and enjoyed hours of exploration... only feeling disappointed when we got to a point that gave us the option of jumping into some of the other books we hadn't purchased. So why did I say these books were a poor choice? My mother and uncle had to leave my brother and I at home. We refused to go out and enjoy the Irish countryside and beaches because we'd have to pry ourselves away from these books! In retrospect I wish I'd saved the books until we got back to the states to start. *Laughs* That said, my only complaint was that the books were too good to put down. Once we got back to the States we were unable to find copies of the series (in the pre amazon/internet) days. Finally my brother and I will be able to buy more of the books and enjoy the rest of the game worlds. Please show support for the series by purchasing the first few volumes of the series so that the rest of it will be either re-released... or in the case of later books in the series that were planned, but cancelled before ever being printed, printed for the first time! If you are a gaming parent who has children who enjoy Choose-Your-Own-Adventure style books, this is the perfect next step in their gaming initiation.

He played in Interzonals at Saltsj�baden 1948, Saltsj�baden 1952, Gothemburg 1955,�Portoroz 1958,�Amsterdam 1964 and Manila 1976. Pachman was the first chess grandmaster to truly publicly endorse, investigate and recommend computer chess. Pachman played eight tournament games against Bobby Fischer, finishing with an even score. His most famous game is his win over Bobby Fischer in Chile in 1959.

About the Author
Ludek Pachman was born in Czechoslovakia on May 11, 1924. The most successful year of his career was 1959. After winning the Czechoslovakian championship he went on a South American tour, winning tournaments in Mar del Plata (tied with Miguel Najdorf), Santiago, Chile (tied with Borislav Ivkov) and Lima, Peru (again tied with Ivkov). On this tour he beat the 16-year-old Bobby Fischer twice. Pachman made an even lifetime score against Fischer, +2 ?2 =4 In spite of his great accomplishments as a player, Pachman is now remembered primarily as a writer and teacher. He is credited with writing more than 60 chess books. This book, in three volumes, is considered his master work. Ludek Pachman died on March 6, 2003 in Passau, Germany
