About the Author

Brian Goetz is a software consultant with twenty years industry experience, with over 75 articles on Java development. He is one of the primary members of the Java Community Process JSR 166 Expert Group (Concurrency Utilities), and has served on numerous other JCP Expert Groups.

Tim Peierls is the very model of a modern multiprocessor, with BoxPop.biz, recording arts, and goings on theatrical. He is one of the primary members of the Java Community Process JSR 166 Expert Group (Concurrency Utilities), and has served on numerous other JCP Expert Groups.

Joshua Bloch is a principal engineer at Google and a Jolt Award-winner. He was previously a distinguished engineer at Sun Microsystems and a senior systems designer at Transarc. Josh led the design and implementation of numerous Java platform features, including JDK 5.0 language enhancements and the award-winning Java Collections Framework. He holds a Ph.D. in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University.

Joseph Bowbeer is a software architect at Vizrea Corporation where he specializes in mobile application development for the Java ME platform, but his fascination with concurrent programming began in his days at Apollo Computer. He served on the JCP Expert Group for JSR-166 (Concurrency Utilities).

David Holmes is director of DLTeCH Pty Ltd, located in Brisbane, Australia. He specializes in synchronization and concurrency and was a member of the JSR-166 expert group that developed the new concurrency utilities. He is also a contributor to the update of the Real-Time Specification for Java, and has spent the past few years working on an implementation of that specification.

Doug Lea is one of the foremost experts on object-oriented technology and software reuse. He has been doing collaborative research with Sun Labs for more than five years. Lea is Professor of Computer Science at SUNY Oswego, Co-director of the Software Engineering Lab at the New York Center for Advanced Technology in Computer Applications, and Adjunct Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Syracuse University. In addition, he co-authored the book, Object-Oriented System Development (Addison-Wesley, 1993). He received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from the University of New Hampshire.

At this writing, multicore processors are just now becoming inexpensive enough for midrange desktop systems. Not coincidentally, many development teams are noticing more and more threading-related bug reports in their projects. In a recent post on the NetBeans developer site, one of the core maintainers observed that a single class had been patched over 14 times to fix threading-related problems. Dion Almaer, former editor of TheServerSide, recently blogged (after a painful debugging session that ultimately revealed a threading bug) that most Java programs are so rife with concurrency bugs that they work only "by accident". Indeed, developing, testing and debugging multithreaded programs can be extremely difficult because concurrency bugs do not manifest themselves predictably. And when they do surface, it is often at the worst possible time--in production, under heavy load.

One of the challenges of developing concurrent programs in Java is the mismatch between the concurrency features offered by the platform and how developers need to think about concurrency in their programs. The language provides low-level mechanisms such as synchronization and condition waits, but these mechanisms must be used consistently to implement application-level protocols or policies. Without such policies, it is all too easy to create programs that compile and appear to work but are nevertheless broken. Many otherwise excellent books on concurrency fall short of their goal by focusing excessively on low-level mechanisms and APIs rather than design-level policies and patterns.

Java 5.0 is a huge step forward for the development of concurrent applications in Java, providing new higher-level components and additional low-level mechanisms that make it easier for novices and experts alike to build concurrent applications. The authors are the primary members of the JCP Expert Group that created these facilities; in addition to describing their behavior and features, we present the underlying design patterns and anticipated usage scenarios that motivated their inclusion in the platform libraries. Our goal is to give readers a set of design rules and mental models that make it easier--and more fun--to build correct, performant concurrent classes and applications in Java.

How to use this book

To address the abstraction mismatch between Java's low-level mechanisms and the necessary design-level policies, we present a simplified set of rules for writing concurrent programs. Experts may look at these rules and say "Hmm, that's not entirely true: class C is thread-safe even though it violates rule R." While it is possible to write correct programs that break our rules, doing so requires a deep understanding of the low-level details of the Java Memory Model, and we want developers to be able to write correct concurrent programs without having to master these details. Consistently following our simplified rules will produce correct and maintainable concurrent programs.

We assume the reader already has some familiarity with the basic mechanisms for concurrency in Java. Java Concurrency in Practice is not an introduction to concurrency--for that, see the threading chapter of any decent introductory volume, such as The Java Programming Language (Arnold et al., 2005). Nor is it an encyclopedic reference for All Things Concurrency--for that, see Concurrent Programming in Java (Lea, 2000). Rather, it offers practical design rules to assist developers in the difficult process of creating safe and performant concurrent classes. Where appropriate, we cross-reference relevant sections of The Java Programming Language, Concurrent Programming in Java, The Java Language Specification (Gosling et al., 2005), and Effective Java (Bloch, 2001) using the conventions JPL n.m, CPJ n.m, JLS n.m, and EJ Item n.

After the introduction (Chapter 1), the book is divided into four parts:

Fundamentals. Part I (Chapters 2-5) focuses on the basic concepts of concurrency and thread safety, and how to compose thread-safe classes out of the concurrent building blocks provided by the class library. A "cheat sheet" summarizing the most important of the rules presented in Part I appears on page 110.Chapters 2 (Thread Safety) and 3 (Sharing Objects) form the foundation for the book. Nearly all of the rules on avoiding concurrency hazards, constructing thread-safe classes, and verifying thread safety are here. Readers who prefer "practice" to "theory" may be tempted to skip ahead to Part II, but make sure to come back and read Chapters 2 and 3 before writing any concurrent code!

Chapter 4 (Composing Objects) covers techniques for composing thread-safe classes into larger thread-safe classes. Chapter 5 (Building Blocks) covers the concurrent building blocks--thread-safe collections and synchronizers--provided by the platform libraries.

Structuring Concurrent Applications. Part II (Chapters 6-9) describes how to exploit threads to improve the throughput or responsiveness of concurrent applications. Chapter 6 (Task Execution) covers identifying parallelizable tasks and executing them within the task-execution framework. Chapter 7 (Cancellation and Shutdown) deals with techniques for convincing tasks and threads to terminate before they would normally do so; how programs deal with cancellation and shutdown is often one of the factors that separates truly robust concurrent applications from those that merely work. Chapter 8 (Applying Thread Pools) addresses some of the more advanced features of the task-execution framework.

Chapter 9 (GUI Applications) focuses on techniques for improving responsivenessin single-threaded subsystems. Liveness, Performance, and Testing. Part III (Chapters 10-12) concerns itself with ensuring that concurrent programs actually do what you want them to do and do so with acceptable performance. Chapter 10 (Avoiding Liveness Hazards) describes how to avoid liveness failures that can prevent programs from making forward progress. Chapter 11 (Performance and Scalability) covers techniques for improving the performance and scalability of concurrent code. Chapter 12 (Testing Concurrent Programs) covers techniques for testing concurrent code for both correctness and performance.

Advanced Topics. Part IV (Chapters 13-16) covers topics that are likely to be of interest only to experienced developers: explicit locks, atomic variables, nonblocking algorithms, and developing custom synchronizers.

Code examples

While many of the general concepts in this book are applicable to versions of Java prior to Java 5.0 and even to non-Java environments, most of the code examples (and all the statements about the Java Memory Model) assume Java 5.0 or later. Some of the code examples may use library features added in Java 6.

The code examples have been compressed to reduce their size and to highlight the relevant portions. The full versions of the code examples, as well as supplementary examples and errata, are available from the book's website, http://www.javaconcurrencyinpractice.com.

The code examples are of three sorts: "good" examples, "not so good" examples, and "bad" examples. Good examples illustrate techniques that should be emulated. Bad examples illustrate techniques that should definitely not be emulated, and are identified with a "Mr. Yuk" icon to make it clear that this is "toxic" code. Not-so-good examples illustrate techniques that are not necessarily wrong but are fragile, risky, or perform poorly, and are decorated with a "Mr. Could BeHappier" icon.

Some readers may question the role of the "bad" examples in this book; after all, a book should show how to do things right, not wrong. The bad examples have two purposes. They illustrate common pitfalls, but more importantly they demonstrate how to analyze a program for thread safety--and the best way to do that is to see the ways in which thread safety is compromised.

This is a great primer on all the new things added in java.util.concurrency in Java 5 and 6. I'd love to see a 2nd edition that covers fork/join from Java 7, and the new concurrent streams in Java 8.

You're not a professional Java developer until you've read this book twice

I've been using Java in the professional setting for about 4 years now. There have been times where concurrent software implementations were a necessity to get the job done. It was during these projects where I realized that I was simply following a set of patterns that had been beaten into me by peers/blogs/how-to's over the years without really understanding the gritty details of why those patterns were needed, and what was actually happening.

This book IS the "why". This book is made out of 94% pure industry grade "grit".

Ever hear someone talk about thread visibility and not know what they were on about? Have you NOT heard of thread visibility? Ever wonder what exactly the "volatile" key word is and what it guarantees? Does the phrase "Java Memory Model" cause you anxiety at the mere mentioning of it?

This book will massage all those worries/misunderstandings/anti-patterns right out of your grey matter. The book is incredibly easy to read for anyone who has worked with Java seriously in the past. The book does a fantastic job of laying out in incredibly concise wording what it means to be thread safe, what it means to work atomically, what it means to have thread visibility, etc. etc. all the way into the deep bowels of the JVM's memory model, and how and why it's doing what it's doing. A must have book for any professional Java developer's library.

A great overview - if you're thinking of getting it, you probably should

Even after a couple years and JDK releases, this still seems to be the go-to primer for Java...well, concurrency. You know, like the title says. It's not without reason - the book is well-written and straightforward and takes you through a punchlist of topics, all the way from the lauded Executors family down to Object.wait() and .notify(), and even into the foundational AbstractQueuedSynchronizer, which a lot of the higher-level APIs use under the hood.

If I could wish for one more thing out of this book, it's an update. Sure, the biggest update for Java concurrency APIs was 1.5, but there are new additions I'd like to see covered in this kind of detail and clarity.

The twelfth installment in this wonderful, ironically funny, mystery series, DEATH OF AN EFFENDI was a treat to read from start to finish. With a deep appreciation for the historical and cultural nuances of the period, Michael Pearce successfully transports the reader to Egypt in the early part of the

twentieth century, sketching out quickly and with a few well placed phrases and sentences the special interests that many foreign powers had in the region, and the frustrations that the locals felt about living in a country under the yoke of a foreign power. But that's just for starters. For, of course, Michael Pearce also manages to marry a clever and cunning mystery subplot to the political one, and tells his story in such a completely wry and gently humourous manner that, before you know it you've spent an

entire afternoon imagining yourself in Egypt, walking the narrow bazaar streets with the Mamur Zapt in

search of evil doers and trying to maintain the status quo. Fast paced and simply told, DEATH OF

AN EFFENDI proved to be a memorable and worthwhile read. I not only enjoyed this installment

thoroughly, but also came away with a better picture of what was going on historically. Shortlisted for

the Ellis Peters Award for Best Historical Novel of the Year (in 1999), DEATH OF AN EFFENDI should have won that award; unfortunately, it didn't. So, hoping to mitigate that oversight, I'm awarding the novel the BLACK DIAMOND for excellence. -- Sheila Nathan, I Love A Mystery Newsletter

Michael Pearce grew up in the (then) Anglo-Egyptian Sudan among the political and other tensions he draws on for his books. He returned there later to teach and retains a human rights interest in the area. His career has followed the standard academic rake’s progress from teaching to writing to administration. He finds international politics a pallid imitation of academic ones.

The twelfth Mamur Zapt mystery, _Death of an Effendi_ is original and clever - one of the better stories in the series. At its core, it is a financial mystery, which is a new take on the genre, one in which I enjoyed tremendously. A foreign gentleman ("effendi") has been murdered, the motive apparently his connection to the world of international finance. As Peacre puts it, "In the world of low finance, you couldn't get away with anything. In the world of high finance, you could - sometimes - get away with murder." With this premise, Pearce takes readers into the complex nature of Egypt under the Khedive - ostensibly an independent state, but one closely managed and strongly influenced by Britain, whose excuse for (almost) governing Egypt was, on the surface, financial.

In the previous Mamur Zapt mysteries, the tension between Egptian governance and British oversight (and governance) was ever present. Even the Mamur Zapt himself is an embodiment of this: the title and office are an Ottoman one, acting as chief of the political police; the person in that office, the fictional Gareth Owen, is a Welsh captain in the British army, put there by the British government. In _Death of an Effendi_, this tension comes front and center: where exactly do the loyalties of Owen lie -wIth the title and job description, or with those who placed him in the office in the first place? In wrestling with this convergence of interests, the Mamur Zapt must also delve into the world of finance to discover the connections and motives behind the murder and to find those responsible.

The fictional plot points of the crime and the protagonist are brilliantly interwoven with larger factual issues: the immense agricultural potential of the Fayoum, of Egyptian national interests, and of course of the economic and political interests of the Great Powers, each seeking to beneift (as has Britain) at the expense of Egypt, each nation protected by the "capitulations" granting special legal privlidges to foreigners.

As with the earlier books in the series, Pearce has a remarkable eye for the details of life in Egypt, and the interplay between characters and their motives (be it political, financial or romantic) is witty and clever. What makes _Death of an Effendi_ such a good read is the seamless manner in which history and fiction are blended together. Even though this story is well into the series, if you were to read only one of the books featuring the Mamur Zapt, this would be my recommendation.

great early twentieth century Egyptian police procedural

In 1909 Egypt the Mamur Zapt, Gareth Owen, joins several VIPs on a shoot that makes him feel like a duck out of water as most of the effendi attending are financiers or royals. However, during the gala, someone shoots the Russian Tvardovsky. As expected by his position, Owen begins to investigate to determine whether the death was an accident or a homicide with his only clue being that the foreign victim discussed crocodiles in Egypt.
Prince Fuad interferes with the Mamur Zapt inquiries trying to insure that an accident is reported if he cannot stop the investigation. However, Gareth continues to look into the matter with the diligence he always brings to his job though he worries about the repercussions from the royals, especially how Fuad will react. Fuad increases the pressure for Owen to conduct a sham, but he refuses.
The Mamur Zapt series consistently provide some of the best early twentieth century police procedural tales on the market. The latest entry, DEATH OF AN EFFENDI, is a fabulous tale that as usual provides an intriguing glimpse at Egypt in 1909 where foreigners heavily influence what happens to the country. The investigation is top of the line as Gareth struggles with Prince Fuad's reluctance and with potential witnesses fearful of alienating foreigners and or the Mamur Zapt. Fans of historical mysteries will appreciate this tale that brings to life a bygone era whose impact remains strong almost a century later.

A truly beautiful and virtually perfect children's book

The Snail and the Whale is one of the best -- if not THE best -- children's books we've ever read. (And we've read many hundreds by now.) This one excels in every aspect:

1. What a jewel of a story -- about an unlikely friendship, globe-trotting adventure, creative problem-solving and resourcefulness, thinking beyond the confines of one's limitations (perceived or otherwise)...

2. The book is beautifully written. The rhymes and prose flow seamlessly. It's lovely to both read and listen to.

3. The artwork is excellent, too. The pictures are vivid, colorful, and engaging. We've read the book dozens of times by now, and we'll still often notice some new little detail.

This was our first Julia Donaldson book but remains my favorite. The Gruffalo and Room on the Broom have also been hits, and they're also very good. The story and prose quality of The Snail and the Whale are better, in my opinion. But we will try other books by this author. (Thank you for this amazing contribution to children's lit, Julia Donaldson!)

The Kid's Book Trifecta: Drawings, Rhyme, Story

Rarely does a book for little ones hit top marks on the three things that matter most, but this one does - 1) vibrant, clear, colorful and engaging drawings, 2) rhymes that really connect, with strong measures, sophisticated structure, and emphasis and flow that works whether read silently or out loud, 3) a heart warming story with multiple positive messages, (self reliance, friendship, resourcefulness, nerve, imagination, and a general sense of generous good heartedness).

Perfect for bedtime, the story starts calmly, leads our snail and whale friends through interesting and exciting adventures, then turns into a rescue drama, moves on to a happy ending, and then winds down with a calm upbeat conclusion. I can feel the grandchild drifting off with a happy smile as the story concludes. Plenty to look at, lots to think about - just a solid, satisfying, engaging and rewarding read for both your youngster and, possibly, you. A very nice choice.

I got a bit tongue tied the first couple times through, but its a permanent collection keeper!

I got a but tongue tied the first couple times I read this book I'm not going to lie! Just like all of this authors stories, it's written like a poem, to a very nice rythem.
The structure of the story was great in the sense that it made my brain work a little to read it (how many toddler books do that!?!) And my 2.5 year old ADORES the story. She actually can now quote a lot of it (and all of The Gruffalo's Child (another of our alltime favorites, by this author).

I've probably read this book 50 times to her since purchase a few weeks ago and forsee many, many, more times for years to come. It will go in our permanent collection.

An Imperfect but Important Work

This book looks at a phenomenon that many people are reluctant to admit even happens: sudden transformations in individuals' characters precipitated specifically by the intentional manipulations of others. This book also looks beyond the manipulations of cults and considers other ways in which modern society, by the very nature of the rapid changes it is undergoing, can precipitate "snapping" or sudden personality change. I think the book tries to extrapolate its central thesis too broadly. At time the authors seem to be merely shopping around for ways to make their ideas sound even bigger and more general in their application. I would have preferred if they had maintained a more narrow focus upon cult members only and upon the ways cult members endure "snapping" and thus can sometimes also be "snapped out" of their programming. As a former member of the Unification Church (the "Moonies") I myself endured this kind of sudden transformation. It certainly needs to be taken seriously and not denied. Nevertheless, former cult members will likely find that Steven Hassan's book, "Combatting Cult Mind Control," is more useful than this book in assisting their own personal recovery.

Helps explain a scary phenomenon

Snapping: America's Epidemic of Sudden Personality Change is a well written, well researched book about the influences of cults, mind control, thought reform, coercive persuasion and severe pressure.

It explains well what causes people to 'snap', and it also explains how snapping is brought about in cult situations.

In addition, the book offers some hope for getting people out of these unethically influenced states of mind in the cases of cults, 'human potential' organisations, and 'self help' seminars.

Many 'human potential' organisations, and 'self help' seminars use similar methods to those employed by cults. Beware. Research them well through the Internet and through people who have done these courses beforehand. Too many sad stories are available on the 'net about the negative influence of such organisations. Not all of them are bad, but do the research beforehand.

Many of these courses promises breakthroughs. Sadly, the moment of breakthrough is often actually the moment of breakdown.

This book will give readers an understanding of sudden personality change and being educated about it is the first step to being able to do something about it if, as in my case, you have had a loved one subjected to these unethical practices.

Believe me, it is a frightening and hurtful experience. For me, it has been going on for a year. For others, sometimes it has gone on for decades.

Also, if you are interested in Jim Jones, Jonestown, and the People's Temple or David Koresh, the Branch Davidians, and the Waco tragedy, this book offers a good breakdown of what happened.

I highly recommend it. It is one of the best books on what happens to people in cults, and other situations that cause sudden personality changes.

Exposing cult control tactics

Cults provided the authors a research perspective on snapping and opened the door wider into areas where it flourishes less strikingly. If insight into the dynamics of the basics of how cults pull innocent people into their vortexes, this book will explain much.

I expected the book to be more broad in its research scope, but their approach into studying snapping through cults was necessary as the two authors (one with a degree in philosophy, the other, communication) broke ground in the mysteries of what was happening to people whose minds were transformed, sometimes almost overnight. As it is heavy on cults, readers can expect lots of background into the inside dynamics of all varieties of cults including Christian, Hindu, new age, and self-help. Afterward, a special chapter is devoted to snapping in general society.

There is no mention of mainstream self-help figures, and I don't think the authors would put them in their radar, but through reading this book, it is made clear that all self-help programs use the same elements as the cults, though in more moderation. There is always the charismatic leader whose energy ignites sparks in the listeners. Anthony Robbins, through his programs, entices listeners to "dream big" and, during goal setting exercises, asks them if they would like to have things like "chefs," "gardeners," and other extremely nice but extremely expensive luxuries affordable to those who "make it" financially. And, in his real-world transformation seminars, participants engage in events like fire walks to change their limiting beliefs. Indeed still others such as Dr. Oz or Joel Osteen offer services to their audience, but we learn that, as the youngest ever ordained minister-turned Oscar winning documentary maker Marjoe reveals (p.41), "It's the charisma of the evangelist that the audience believes in and comes to see." That may be obvious, but it helps to hear it straight from someone who left the industry after he saw through how his "healing powers" were phony, fraudulent, and damaging lives. More startling is when he explains that in his travels to college campuses (full of bright minds) how he explicitly tells groups that he is a phony, then proceeds still to get someone on stage, lay hands on someone in a demonstration, and cause them to drop to the floor in "healing."

Parts of the book read like a 60 minutes interview, which give the reader a point of reference beyond the authors' research and really make obvious the impact these destructive abuses take on people's lives. I was shocked to find out that the Church of Scientology's methods of auditing are, per hour gone through, more destructive (by roughly two fold) than the other cults.

What are we to do as a society about this? It's a gray area that these non-profit organizations operate in and are exploiting. The government hasn't touched the issue because the cults can claim religious persecution, even though (p. 291) "the bureau [FBI] strongly believes in mind control" said Richard Scruggs, Assistant to former Attorney General Janet Reno. The book raises tough questions, such as "Is an individual free to give up his freedom of thought?" (p. 70).

For those of us who have not directly or indirectly dealt with cults, chapter seventeen Snapping in Everyday Life cautions that there are still concerns to be had for the rest of us. The authors describe information disease, which is one component of how a mind is put at risk to snap. ID describes the overwhelming amount of input we receive every day: radio, TV, news, job stress and "countless interests competing for our attention." It causes sickness by causing our brains to surrender and just not think; the brain cannot process it all and becomes increasingly vulnerable.

Especially vulnerable are young minds, but not so much from the stress, but more the hypnotic power of television. (p.309) "A 1992 study found that children watching television for even brief periods often lapse into a 'deeply relaxed, almost semi-conscious state' that falls metabolically between resting and sleeping." Also, social skills are prone to be grossly underdeveloped.

Then also, what might the implications be for extremist groups that commit terrorist acts? We learn that leaders of these groups need not be highly trained to manufacture followers willing to give their lives and die for their cause; these tactics are not reserved for government officials and three-letter bureaus. And, we might expect only religious fanatics or naive individuals to be lead into these traps, but we learn that many groups specifically target wealthy middle-class Americans in unsuspecting places like shopping malls.

How can we spot these recruiters? How can young adults pick them out on college campuses? What are the warning signs that a friend or loved one might be in danger? In answering these questions, Snapping is an important book with a dire message.

Ronald Barnett is Professor of Higher Education at the Institute of Education, University of London where, from 1994 to 2001, he was also Dean of Professional Development. His books include The Idea of Higher Education, The Limits of Competence, Higher Education: A Critical Business, Realizing the University and Beyond All Reason (all published by Open University Press).

Kelly Coate is Research Officer in the School of Lifelong Education and International Development at the Institute of Education, University of London. Her research interests are in the areas of teaching and learning in higher education, the higher education curriculum, and social justice and equity issues.
