A wealth of tools and inputs for anybody having to deal with metrics.

In the last few years the term "security metrics" has developed somewhat into a holy grail. Everybody wants them, everybody seems to know that they are necessary, but how the devil is the CISO or the IT department able to get them? As a result we were presented with ISO 27004, some NIST papers and others and the time of writing the term "security metrics" generates over 2.4m hits when googled and "information security metrics" over 990'000.
As a CISO I am need of security metrics myself but was always a little bit hesitant of delving deeper into the matter as some of the books I read about the topic seemed arcane and rather impractical for daily use. And now this book comes along, making the whole matter in my opinion much clearer and easier to handle.

In the first few chapters Brotby and Hinson provide an overview of the status quo and the why and how of security metrics. They deal with great insight with the differing methods and concepts, and the purpose of and audience for security metrics. Chapter 5 deals concisely with points actually to be measured and where one can find them. Throughout the language is very accessible, making this book a pleasure to read and work with.

In chapter 6 the authors then provide us with a thoughtful introduction to their PRAGMATIC approach which is followed by a chapter with over 150 information security metrics. All these metrics are explained in detail, are easy to understand and thus provide a practical tool ready to use for anybody in need of reference points what and how to "measure security".

The next chapter deals concisely with the "how to". The authors provide a clear and concise explanation of how to design an information security measurement system using their method. In just about 20 pages they manage to make clear what has to go into the system, which reference points are to be considered and how everything can be pulled together in order to be able to create a system which can be easily handled and worked with as required.

The final chapters then provide the readers with more information about using metrics in general and the system of Brotby and Hinson in particular. A case study shows the practical application of the PRAGMATIC system and the final pages provide once more a wealth of helpful tools.

In summary I would like to give the following verdict: Until now I have not come across a book about information security metrics that was so clearly and concisely written. The book is easy to understand and provides a wealth of tools and inputs for anybody having to deal with metrics.

The sample metrics and the very thoughtful insights regarding the creation of an information security metrics system tailor-made for the individual organization hopefully will make this book a standard work. It is clear that the authors have thought a lot about the subject and also have practical experience in the matter, as otherwise this tome would have turned out turgid and technological, something which it clearly is not.

Good guide for to develop an information security metrics program

Like all books on metrics, early in PRAGMATIC Security Metrics: Applying Metametrics to Information Security authors Krag Brotby and Gary Hinson state that “you can't manage what you can't measure”.

The authors claim that other books on information security metrics discuss number theory and statistics in academic terms. This title promises to be light on mathematics and heavy on utility and is meant as a how-to-do-it guide for security metrics.

Based on that claim, the authors likely had a book such as Data-Driven Security: Analysis, Visualization and Dashboards by Jay Jacobs and Bob Rudis in mind. As Jacobs and Rudis do indeed use statistics extensively in their approach to security metrics.

As to the title, PRAGMATIC is an acronym for the basis of the method of the book, in using metrics that are predictive, relevant, actionable, genuine, meaningful, timely, independent and cost.

One of the benefits of the book is that it provides a method to create quantitative methods for risk, and how to estimate which resources to use to mitigate those identified risks

The authors note that as a consequence of the way the field of information security has developed from IT security, current practice in security metrics seems to be driving by the availability of raw data from firewalls and other systems. But when it comes to measuring security, many organizations completely ignore the nontechnical factors that are often of equal importance to managing information security in a manner that supports the firm’s business objectives. And that is precisely the gap the book is attempting to fix.

Chapter 7 makes up the bulk of the book when it details over 150 different useful metrics in which to use.

For those looking for a book in which to develop their information security metrics program, in PRAGMATIC Security Metrics: Applying Metametrics to Information Security is a valuable reference.

More than metrics

This books makes you think about metrics. It is applied to information security, but the line of thinking can easily be extended to many other fields of management. Before offering a rated choice of about 150 metrics, the authors explain a complete methodology on choosing and rating candidate metrics. A must read for those that produce KPI's for senior management, or for senior manager that want to be informed by useful indicators.

A Moving and Brilliant Play

The play's main narrative line tells the story of the Salem witch hunts which took place in Massachusetts, 1692. At a deeper level, Miller raises several powerful and important questions about human life and morality. But the play's most amazing quality is that it is not "deep" or "philosophical" by traditional standards. Miller has, in a short and easy-to-read manuscript, opened the door (or maybe I should say he presents the reader with a mirror) to modern political life.
The play is essentially a crtique of McCarthyism and the the communist scare of the 1950s. Miller saw the parallels between the witch hunts and the McCarthy trials, and found the witch trials to be a compelling vehicle for discussing modern events. Key themes include:
1. People gaining absolution from the powers-that-be by confessing the sins of others.
2. The power of community rituals, such as confession.
3. The role of political opposition and the consequences of compliance (passive or active).
4. The consequences of a polarized world views and mass hysteria.
These are just a few of the themes. The play is quite clearly a great tragedy, but remains a tragedy for our times. Through characters we can connect with, Miller convincingly shows us that the lessons from the witch hunts still apply. As a reader, I am convinced that Miller's play remains relevant and powerful in the twenty-first century. Miller has left me with questions, regarding world events in 2002 and 2003, that I did not have before reading the play.
I read this play in only a couple hours. It is compelling, engaging, and difficult to put down. Personally, I feel this text stands a great chance of making it onto my "top ten" list of best manuscripts. I highly recommend this play.

Frightening Possibilities

As usual, Arthur Miller was in rare form when he wrote "The Crucilble." Although on the surface it is about the Salem Witch Trials, Miller's true inspiration came from the Red Scare that plagued Hollywood in the middle of the twentieth century (and included his pal Elia Kazan). The fact that Miller wove factual history with the hysteria of his day makes "The Crucible" all the more chilling.

Throughout the course of the play, a collection of teenage girls 'confess' to having seen various women and men of the town of Salem with the devil. This hysteria sweeps over the town as even the authorities fall under the sway of these lying young girls. Caught in the middle of these hysteronics is the Proctor family - John and Elizabeth, who have struggled in the past, but are trying to rebuild their marriage. They are rent apart when Elizabeth is suspected of being a witch. John hopes to clear his wife's name, but only manages to make matters worse for both of them.

The hysteria experienced in Salem is chilling in the fact that these sorts of witch hunts occur today, in all different areas of society. "The Crucible" shows how easily people can be swayed, with the barest of evidence, to believe something that is false. Miller's play is extremely well-written and informative, and almost too frighteningly real.

a great recording

I used this recording this year while teaching "The Crucible". My students loved it!! The emotion conveyed by the cast is SO much better than the typical monotone voice that students use while reading out loud. Even though there were some small parts that are skipped when following along with our textbook, it was completely worth it (and the parts skipped were very small - it was very easy to read it aloud if necessary).

About the Author

Michael J. Sandel is the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor of Government at Harvard University, where he has taught since 1980. He is the author of many books, including Justice: What's the Right Thing to Do?, a New York Times bestseller in hardcover and paperback and a bestseller in translation in Japan and South Korea as well. He has taught his undergraduate course "Justice" to more than 15,000 Harvard students over the years, and video footage of the course were adapted into a PBS television series. Sandel graduated summa cum laude from Brandeis University and received his doctorate from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He served on the George W. Bush administration's President's Council on Bioethics. He lives in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Awesome!

Sandel is a wonderful author, and you can tell by the way he writes that he is a wonderful teacher in the classroom.

I can recommend this book along with his previous book, "Justice: What's the Right Thing to Do?"

These books offer no easy or ready-made answers. Instead, they invite us to reflect on moral and ethical dilemmas, and how we humans try to deal with them.

The bottom line is that morality, just like anything else in this universe, cannot violate the first law of thermodynamics. We live in a relatively closed system as a society and so decisions--political, moral, or economic--all require a knowledge of what we must give before we get.

In his latest book Sandel asks us to consider what we are giving up when we try to put a market price on everything in life.

Oscar Wilde once defined the cynic as a man who knows the price of everything but the value of nothing. I believe that Sandel is trying to warn us against becoming a completely cynical society, a society that looks at everything through the filter of an account ledger, blinding ourselves to all the other ways in which we should relate to one another in a society.

Read this book! You will be glad you did.

Money Is Not Fair

Sandel has all the credentials that make for a fine commentary on modern American commercial society. His deep sense of what constitutes justice informs his many examples in the book of how businesses and corporations have stolen the public arena for their advertisements. He clearly describes how this creeping phenomenon has taken over the commons and usurped public spaces for their capitalistic messages. According to dispassionate marketing theories, these intrusions make sense, in the context of maximizing efficiency and promoting the common good. Sandel points out, however, that the cost is a loss of fairness and a warped idea of what community should be.

In What Money Can’t Buy: The Moral Limits of Markets, Michael Sandel presents many different, thought-provoking situations to determine what the morality of markets is. In addition, he asks what we, as citizens, are going to do about this because our society is drifting from having a free market economy to a market society with every purchase. I really enjoyed Sandel’s book and thought he was a fantastic author. He set up each situation, such as the purchase of human organs or to stand in line for a congressman, like it was a new chapter, so following the scenarios was really easy to do and I found it very hard to get lost while reading this book. Furthermore, Sandel is a Harvard professor, so he has ethos when presenting his case, which only adds to the whole dimension of the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in economics, philosophy, or is just looking to kill a car ride; this book will keep you entertained, while forming an opinion for yourself. After reading this book, a person will begin to question each commodity purchase because this book will force a person to think that way.

Epic in scale and intimate in approach, White Teeth is a formidably ambitious debut. First novelist Zadie Smith takes on race, sex, class, history, and the minefield of gender politics, and such is her wit and inventiveness that these weighty subjects seem effortlessly light. She also has an impressive geographical range, guiding the reader from Jamaica to Turkey to Bangladesh and back again.

Still, the book's home base is a scrubby North London borough, where we encounter Smith's unlikely heroes: prevaricating Archie Jones and intemperate Samad Iqbal, who served together in the so-called Buggered Battalion during World War II. In the ensuing decades, both have gone forth and multiplied: Archie marries beautiful, bucktoothed Clara--who's on the run from her Jehovah's Witness mother--and fathers a daughter. Samad marries stroppy Alsana, who gives birth to twin sons. Here is multiculturalism in its most elemental form: "Children with first and last names on a direct collision course. Names that secrete within them mass exodus, cramped boats and planes, cold arrivals, medical checks."

Big questions demand boldly drawn characters. Zadie Smith's aren't heroic, just real: warm, funny, misguided, and entirely familiar. Reading their conversations is like eavesdropping. Even a simple exchange between Alsana and Clara about their pregnancies has a comical ring of truth: "A woman has to have the private things--a husband needn't be involved in body business, in a lady's... parts." And the men, of course, have their own involvement in bodily functions: The deal was this: on January 1, 1980, like a New Year dieter who gives up cheese on the condition that he can have chocolate, Samad gave up masturbation so that he might drink. It was a deal, a business proposition, that he had made with God: Samad being the party of the first part, God being the sleeping partner. And since that day Samad had enjoyed relative spiritual peace and many a frothy Guinness with Archibald Jones; he had even developed the habit of taking his last gulp looking up at the sky like a Christian, thinking: I'm basically a good man. Not all of White Teeth is so amusingly carnal. The mixed blessings of assimilation, for example, are an ongoing torture for Samad as he watches his sons grow up. "They have both lost their way," he grumbles. "Strayed so far from what I had intended for them. No doubt they will both marry white women called Sheila and put me in an early grave." Smith (recently profiled in an issue of The New Yorker) has written an epic tale of two interconnected families. It begins with the suicide attempt of hapless, coin-flipping Archibald Jones on New Year's Day, 1975, and ends, after a 100-year ramble back and forth through time, on New Year's Eve, 1992, with his accidental (or preordained?) release of a poor mutant mouse programmed to do away with the randomness of creation. Smith evokes images of teeth throughout the novel. Do they symbolize some characteristic shared by all of humanity in this novel about ethnicity, class, belonging, homeland, family, adolescence, identity, blindness, and ignorance? Or are they meant to distract the reader from the all-encompassing theme of fate? Smith's characters are tossed about by decisions made deliberately, rashly, or by the flip of a coin. As Smith pieces together this story with bits of fabric from different times and places, the reader must contemplate whether our choices determine our future or whether fate leads us to an inevitable destiny. This fine first novel from Smith is most highly recommended for all libraries.

Monstropolous Ingenuity!

This is a first class debut novel, which has made the news due to the huge advance, which the author received - a six-figure number. So, the question seems to be: is White Teeth worth all that money? The answer has to be YES.
White Teeth is a brilliant novel, superbly confident in its execution. It starts off in 1975, the year of the author's birth, with the attempted suicide of Archibald Jones. Anyone who was born in 1970s Britain cannot fail but identify with the characters and events in this book. If you can recall the VW badge craze, then this is the book for you. However, this is not just a novel for the younger generation, for there is at least one extended family in White Teeth, each member of which is brought vividly to life. There's Archibald Jones and Samed Iqbal, who first meet in a British tank in 1945, and who then meet up again thirty years later to start the families featured within White Teeth. There's the brilliant and comic portrayal of the aged Hortense Bowden, an avid Jehovah's Witness, who keeps waiting for the end of the world.
Zadie Smith's novel has been described as Dickensenian, but I think there's a touch of Thackeray in there too. The author mocks her characters, and parodies them, but she also has a lot of compassion for them. No one, in the world of White Teeth, is beyond redemption. Zadie Smith's characters are truly vibrant. Take Samed Iqbal and his troubles with 'slapping the salami'. As a reader, you begin to wonder how Zadie Smith has such insight into the male mind and universe, because it rings so true.
For anyone embarking on a Cultural Studies course, this novel is a must. Throw away your textbooks with their dry statistics! One of White Teeth's main themes is the mix of cultures in North London, from the Bengali Iqbals, to the archetypal Englishman Archie Jones, to the half-Jamaican Bowdens, and a slight smattering of the Irish. The novel maps these characters as they try to live out their years in a world which is losing religion and tradition. Samed kidnaps one of his sons to be brought up as a proper Bengali back home, while his other son, Millat, flirts with girls and joins the fundamentalist Keepers of the Eternal and Victorious Islamic Nation (KEVIN - they've got an acronym problem).
History and fate are intermingled in this novel. Hortense Bowden's apocalyptic vision of the future is indivisibly linked to the aftershocks of her birth. Samed can't stop boring people with tales of his illustrious ancestor, the rebellious Mangal Pande. Irie Jones seeks to visit her family's home of Jamaica. And Joyce Chalfen sees genius in each Chalfen portrait, whilst Joshua Chalfen literally joins up with FATE. Archie Jones, who leaves most decisions to the flick of a coin, also finds that History has a nasty shock in store for him. However, the future's present here also, with Marcus Chalfen's work on genetics forming a pivotal part of the plot.
Like BBC TV's 'Our Friends in the North', White Teeth is divided up amongst a handful of years relevant to the characters. So, you can wallow in nostalgia as you see the Berlin Wall fall down once more, relive of the turmoil of that October 1987 storm, and remind yourself of the Bradford protest against The Satanic Verses. Salman Rushdie's review of White Teeth is the only bit of marketing on the front cover, and indeed, Zadie Smith has been compared favourably with Rushdie.
There are quite a few pop culture allusions scattered throughout the novel, but I doubt that these will date, as they tend to be of the immortal kind (references to 'Taxi Driver', and 'Goodfellas'). The plot of another gangster movie, 'Miller's Crossing', seems to reflect Archie Jones' dilemma. But please don't point any tedious accusations of theft in Zadie Smith's direction. She has her own, extremely witty, voice as a writer, and White Teeth comes very much from her perspective. It seems that Zadie Smith has been writing this novel for a very long time: witness the similarity of the characters and story in `Mrs. Begum's Son and the Private Tutor', a story short she wrote for the Cambridge May Anthologies in 1997.
There are only a few jarring notes. Smith has a tendency to write aesthetic words such as 'monstropolous', when there's really no need to do it, other than maybe showing off. Having said that, you try looking up `monstropolous' in any online dictionary, and you'll have drawn a blank. But if you look up references to the word on the net, then it points all the way to Zora Neale Hurston's `Their Eyes were Watching God'. Hurston's writing was rediscovered and promoted by Alice Walker in the 70s, and this tome is credited by many for being the first novel in which Southern U.S. Blacks are portrayed as being independent from White society. Once you consider the provenance of `monstropolous', there can be no possible objection to Zadie Smith's prose. What had once seemed intrusive, now has a power all its own. If a single word could tell a story, then `monstropolous' is it. My first impression was wrong. There are no discordant notes. The music is sublime.

Hilarious and empathic

In the last thirty-five years, I can remember "outright and prolonged laughter" while reading three novels: K. Amis's "Lucky Jim," P. Roth's "Portnoy's Complaint," and D. Lodge's "The British Museum is Falling Down." It has been a long time but, finally, here is one more to add to the list. In some ways, what Ms Smith has done is even more impressive when one realizes that her humor is spread among a very wide cast of characters, all of whom we come to know very well, and a variety of times and situations. The narrative has a real drive to it and this, too, intensifies both the humor and the pathos of the characters. It is not as if these characters are particularly novel: the reader will probably feel that he or she knows them or their type. But what Ms. Smith does is to take the familiar and give it a twist or a shove into some unexpected territory. This ability as well as the broad cultural [popular as well as the more traditional and literary] foundation from which the author works make it all the more remarkable that this novel was written when she was only twenty-one. I suppose this is to her credit as well as to the credit of the British educational system. One thing is certain: This is one writer who seems to be able to see more facets of the ethnic and cultural melange than just about anyone else. It may be a cliche, but while I couldn't stop reading, I certainly did not want the book to end. And I await Ms. Smith's second novel with great anticipation.

Abdul-Trevor??!!

I really wanted to like this book, but I just didn't buy into some of the characters. Smith is quite ambitious to write about the thoughts and dreams of middle-aged men and women when she herself is under 30, but sometimes the depictions are convincing.
Little errors bothered me repeatedly. I don't swallow that any Muslim who considers himself or herself even remotely observant would adopt a sacreligious name like "Abdul Trevor" (which would imply that the person by this name is a worshipper of Trevor). Still, at least the Muslims in this novel were presented with some sense of dignity, as opposed to the Jewish characters, who are ruthlessly lampooned (I suppose Smith tries to make up for this in her second novel, about Kabbalist autograph hounds, which I have not read).
On the other hand, the plot does flow and I found "White Teeth" to be light reading and not at all difficult to finish. Not a great book, but neither is it the misery that some of the other readers on this website would portray it as.

This was Krenov walking through the thought process behind both methods of work and project design. There are many valuable design lessons to be learned particularly about grain direction. If you plan to make a Krenov style plane, it's well described within including some dimensioned sketches. Some of his methods of work are a little specific (his horizontal mortiser that is directly attached to the table saw arbor is a little funky. I don't think SawStop has this in the product roadmap) There is some overlap with "A Cabinetmaker's Notebook" but that didn't bother me much at all. I would buy both again.

It depends really on what you want to use this book for...

The book is inspiring if you are looking for something to motivate you in a purist woodworking way. It is not necessarily a how to book, but more of a how to approach woodworking, written in the "old school" philosophy of a master crafstman. Hence the title... "The Fine Art of... " The version of the book I have is from the 70's complete with all black and white pictures. I probably got more out of this book than others in my woodworking libray of the more expensive glossy fluff books put out by many of the current publishers looking to catch your pocket book with eye candy. There is substance to this book and not fluff. It is not a step by step guide (for the most part).

an Insight into wood and cabinetry

I find this book to be insightful and informative. James Kernov has an understanding of wood unlike any other. He feels and sees things in wood that others just pass over.. I loved the way he draws you into each piece as he explains how it spoke to him.
there is great time spent on tools and machinery, how it should be used and how to safely use it. there is also great emphases on hand tools and how to create some of the tools that you will need to create fine works in wood.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in working with wood or who just wants a better understanding of one of the great woodworkers of the last 100 years.. James is a one of a kind worker of wood, and one who we should always remember for what he brought to cabinetry and the wood arts..

Accomplishes what its authors intended

This is a nice addition to the DXA literature. There is a scarcity of DXA textbooks, and most of the existing ones are either too simplistic or overly dry and academic. This book uses real cases to teach the basics of DXA interpretation. I've always wondered why no one has ever published a "how to" on DXA that incorporates the same kind of information that is taught at the ISCD courses (a textbook would be considerably less expensive). I'm subtracting one star due to an important error on page 6 where the T-score range for low bone mass (osteopenia) is given as -2.5 to -1.5 when it should be -2.5 to -1.0. The book is also somewhat expensive given that it is about 150 pages long, but this is probably due to the numerous DXA scan images as well as photos.

An excellent text for the practicing internist

Clear, concise, with complex concepts clearly explained. Contains many excellent case illustrations with images, from normal findings to 'zebras'. Appreciate the no-nonsense and not-bogged-down-in-technicalities approach.
