Eugenio Iannone received his university degree in electronic engineering from Facolt� di Ingegneria, Universit� La Sapienza, Rome, Italy. He is a well-known executive consultant working mainly for small and medium-size companies. He consults on optimizing methods to drive key innovation processes or to transfer technologies from research institutes and universities to the industrial environment. With 15 years of experience in the telecommunication industry, Iannone has held several managerial positions. Since 2002, Iannone has been a senior vice president of application engineering at Pirelli Labs OI, the company’s research and design center for telecommunications and strategy. He has also served as marketing director at PGT Photonics, the arm devoted to telecommunication components and subsystems business. During the course of his career, Iannone has authored more than 100 papers and developed several international patents on optical transmission, optical switching, and the architecture of optical networks.

I give the book 5 starts, however, I found it quite repetitive at times, so I wanted to take a star off, but I still decided that I'd go with the 5 stars, because this book deserves it - especially the last few chapters, specifically, the chapter about the brain that provides the best description of human consciousness that I've ever seen.

Psychobiological portrait of serial killers

The thing that puzzles me about this book is that no-one else seems to have picked up on its author's psychobiological theories, even though "Serial Killers" was published in 1988. I've read more recent books on true crime and haven't come across Norris's psychological or physical profiles of serial killers. I don't know whether this means his assertions are being ignored, or whether his work has been superceded or found to be incorrect.
At any rate, it is very absorbing reading. Dr. Norris takes the reader right into the bizarre, distorted mind of a serial killer. The author should know how they think, since he is a psychologist who has worked within the American prison system and has had the opportunity to interview several serial killers face-to-face, including Theodore Bundy, Henry Lee Lucas, and Bobby Joe Long. In his preface, Dr. Norris claims to performed five hundred interviews over a period of four years (my assumption is that he interviewed the same person multiple times, as I don't think there are five hundred serial killers in prison even over a four year period). What he found was that the patterns of parental abuse, violence, neglect, childhood cognitive disabilities, and alcohol and drug abuse were virtually identical for all of the convicted killers that he interviewed.
One of most important developments in the battle against serial murder was the formation of the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit in Quantico, Virginia. Dr. Norris discusses several of the cases they solved, and also goes into detail about patterns of behavior they detected. For instance, serial killers are compulsive trollers, who travel over ever widening areas to locate their victims. The trolling patterns appear very early, even before they commit their first rape or murder. They also experience a biological rhythm very akin to a menstrual cycle. For some, the cycles of behavior are akin to deep brain seizures that alter perception and behavior without physically incapacitating the individual.
Dr. Norris focuses about a quarter of his book on five serial killers who tell the stories of their lives and their crimes in their own words. The five are Henry Lee Lucas (sentence commuted to life in prison by then-Governor George W. The chapter on Charles Manson is especially interesting, because the author discusses serial killers in groups, i.e. 'killing pairs' or 'families.' Almost 28% of all serial killers bond with others and commit their crimes in company. Killing pairs such as Leonard Lake and Charles Ng, the father/son team of Joseph and Michael Kallinger, the Kenneth Bianchi/Angelo Buono team of Hillside Stranglers, and the homosexual companions Henry Lee Lucas and Ottis Toole all emerged as subjects of study in the 1980s.
If killing pairs are so common, why were all of the criminal profilers (those on T.V., at least) so surprised when the Maryland sniper deaths turned out to have been caused by not one, but two men?
Maybe they should have read "Serial Killers" before going public with their theories.
Last of all, Dr. Norris develops his own profile of a serial killer, including a list of "Twenty-one Patterns of Episodic Aggressive Behavior" that includes items like "Ritualistic behavior," "Extraordinary cruelty to animals," "Evidence of genetic disorders," etc. I found this author to have planted himself firmly on both sides of the nature versus nurture debate.
I bought this book second-hand and one of the more disturbing things I discovered while reading Dr. Norris's list of twenty-one behaviors, was that someone who had read the book before me had initialed eight of the twenty-one items!

Misinformative and unreliable

Joel Norris' book has been criticized as being dated; however much more important is the fact that his information is outright wrong. For example, he characterizes the Zodiac killer as a killer of children who earned his monicker because of the zodiac symbol he carved into the flesh of some of his victims. This is totally untrue. Norris' misinformation cannot be excused on the basis of historical perspective. It is my impression that the author had little interest in getting his facts straight and likely derived much of his information from flawed single sources, without any cross-referencing.

I read these russian protector books all out of order lol and just finished with Nikolai 2. Your writing has really improved since Ivan and the Nikolai books are some of your best work. You have a good handle on sorting out the timeline of your stories and all the relationships of the characters. I can't wait to read the book about Ten. Until then I hope you and you're family are doing well. I read about your diagnosis in your blogs and I'm so sorry people have been rude to you about your deadlines for these stories. Your stories are wonderful but you have to take care of yourself first. I can't to read more from you. And maybe we'll see a book about Niels? (wink wink)

About the Author
Born in Stockholm in 1954, Johan Harmenberg took up fencing at the age of 11. As a freshman at MIT, he led his foil team to the Little Iron Man trophy and a 3rd place finish in the NCAA tournament, as well as an individual 3rd place finish. He won the World Championship in individual men’s epee in 1977 (his Swedish team also took first place). In 1980, he won Olympic gold in individual men’s epee and finished first overall in combined World Cup results. After this, he retired from the elite international scene. In 1982, he received his doctorate in Medical Science from Stockholm’s Karolinska Institut and started a career as a physician specializing in antiviral and cancer research. He has over 100 publications and abstracts and has worked with clinical development at firms such as Roche, AstraZeneca, Pharmacia-Upjohn, and Medivir. In addition, he is on the management team for Swedish fencing, involved in training, team selection, tournament cadre, and as special advisors for talented junior fencers. He lives in Stockholm with his wife, Ulrika. They have two children. His son Karl captained the Harvard fencing team and captured silver medals in the Estonian (2011) and Swedish (2014) championships.

This book would function much better as two separate booklets

Since there has not been much literature written on epee fencing, any new submission is generally eagerly received. This book, however, is somewhat all over the place. It is historical, biographical, instructional, prescriptive and anecdotal. Although the material is interesting to an epee enthusiast it lacks coherence and structure. This book would function much better as two separate booklets: a biographical narrative (Epee 2.5) and a instructional manual (Epee 3.0).

Personal insights into a signficant change in a sport....

If you have read "Epee 2.0" you might not need to purchase "Epee 2.5". There is new material in "Epee 2.5", but I didn't feel that it substantially changed impact of the original book, or provided substantially more information than "Epee 2.0" did. It was interesting to read some of the additional commentary, and the use of a few YouTube links in the text was a nice surprise and helpful.

OI will say that the book is rather poorly set out, with a few small sections of the typography ( in my copy, the picture captions specifically) being almost unreadable. Fonts change for no reason, and so forth. It's distracting, but doesn't significantly reduce the information in the book.

Don't purchase the book for a huge insight into tactical epee fencing. The idea of removing the opponent's pre-requisites to score and forcing the opponent into yours is now universal among good coaches and has been for some time, though I think Harmenberg does a nice job of explaining how this concept -- radical at the time -- worked for him (and, as an aside, one of the strengths of the book is Haremberg's insights into his own processes as an high level athlete).

What was most interesting to me was that this book discusses the evolution of a new, modern style in epee from a very personal point of view. As fencers, we don't document the changes in our sport very well, or engage in the sort of "style analysis" so common in professional sports, so this was a welcome re-read for me.

I know some people have told me that "Epee 2.0" and "Epee 2.5" are the definitive works on modern epee. I would disagree, and argue that such a book has yet to be written.

Great Book...

I really enjoyed this book and will be buying the next one. I do want to say when i was buying the kindle version it said length was '2 ' pages, i knew this was probably an error , BUT I have been fooled before thinking I'm paying for a full length novel and have gotten a 50 page novella. If anyone else seen this and was wondering, yes it's a full novel ( not sure exact number of pages) yes 2 pages is a typo. Hope this helps if someone else was wondering.

Slow and painful--I hope the TV show isn't this bad!

Okay, I really hate it when well published authors put out material that is below par and it still gets published because they've been published already and it's been great in the past.

Charlaine Harris is a wonderful writer. You can tell she's a good writer. This book however is BORING. She excels at creating multifaceted and interesting characters, good dialog and great small town settings with depth. This plot though...arrrggg. There's no major conflict, and the publisher/editors let her get away with rambling on and on about the town and the small ins and outs of small town dinamics. Then, an interesting hint is dropped about one of the characters...then nothing. Show me the conflict!

Another issue I had with this was the point of view it's written in. It's 3rd person and I would have to say it's omniscient. It's distancing and feels a bit awkward. I had a very hard time sinking into the characters as this felt like it was almost more of a screenplay instead of a novel. I could adjust to the POV, however the lack of plot kills it. I couldn't force myself to finish it.

Captivating but still leaves much to be desired

I like a good supernatural novel. Especially one that promises some mystery and hopefully some thrills and chills. However, for a book full of supernatural and unique characters it was a bit of a let down. The psychic has one vision throughout the entire book, the witch has very few interesting gifts and the vampire makes certain sparkling vampires seem badass. The ending was unexpected but very anticlimactic. Very disappointing,

Efraim P. Armendariz is a professor of mathematics at the University of Texas at Austin. His mathematical interests include noncommutative ring theory, development of educational programs addressing accessibility issues, and development of secondary mathematics teachers. He received a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in 1966.

Mark L. Daniels is a clinical associate professor of mathematics and UTeach Natural Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin. His research interests involve the preparation of pre-service teachers and the incorporation of instructional methodology in mathematics courses taken by students seeking certification.
