For the past couple of decades, a small group of thinkers, calling themselves variously ecological economists, degrowthers, and voluntary simplifiers, has undertaken a seemingly quixotic quest against the global obsession with growth for its own sake. They question the idea that increased gross domestic product will invariably help all people regardless of social standing, and question even more the environmental sustainability of limitless growth. A new book, Mobility by John Whitelegg, a British professor of transportation planning and former local government councilor, puts forth a kind of corollary to this thinking, attacking the pursuit of mobility for its own sake. Whitelegg refutes the assumption that simply moving more people more kilometers makes for a better society. Rather, he argues, “mobility measured crudely in terms of how many kilometres we move around every day has nothing whatsoever has to do with quality of life, rich human interaction, satisfaction, happiness and a detailed knowledge and familiarity with places and the things we chose to do in those places.” He further points to an astounding catalog of social and environmental ills caused by this obsession with mobility, from accidents and air pollution to discrimination against the poor, women, and the disabled. The author seems to know what he is talking about. He does bring the basic idea across which is that urban planning can help avoid people needing a car all the time.
He throws in too many numbers and statistics. I think that is only valuable for a very narrow group of readers.

John Whitelegg, Professor John Whitelegg, is a remarkable man who has spent his entire professional life as a scholar, teacher, critic, publisher, activist and politician, trying to make sense out of our curious world and the contradictions of transport and mobility. And in a successful attempt to bring all the threads together, what he has learned about our topic in three decades of international work spanning all continents, he has just produced for our reading and instruction a remarkable and, I truly believe, much-needed book. His title gives away the game – Mobility: Transport Planning Philosophy for a Sustainable Future.

John’s view of transport and mobility is conditioned by the fact that his point of departure is geography (his doctorate) and the uphill struggle to sustainable development and social justice (his professorship). And in the case of this latest book he digs deep beyond all that we can find in the crowded field of books, reports and articles about sustainable transport and sustainable cities, in order to get into the guts of what it is really all about: the live philosophy behind it all. For if we have no philosophy we can have no vision. And if we have no vision there is no way that we can shape and influence our future.

A handful of things distinguish “Mobility” from the rest: It is timely. It is wise. It is readable. And it cost less than $10, and can be in front of our eyes in a few minutes. Yet one more thing that sets apart this book and indeed all the work from the rest is the author's utter willingness to enter into combat to set out and defend his ideas and values. John’s work always brings to mind the wonderful words of the passionate Irish poet and politician, William Butler Yeats, who wrote a century ago that “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." John lights the fire.

Simplest diet ever, especially for the Insulin Resistant crowd

If you look in the mirror and you're fat, you are probably insulin resistant. I was diagnosed with this condition a year ago. The dietician I saw gave me a very complex, difficult to follow diet. I've been looking for an easier plan and this is it. My dietician was prescribing way too many bread and rice carbs for me and it wasn't working. A Week in the Zone is a brief overview of The Zone Diet. This overview is easy to read and the plan is very easy to implement. My husband and I are already feeling better and he lost 2 lbs the first week. This is a very practical meal design, not a fad diet. The "zone" simply refers to keeping glucose and insulin levels in a safe range. My dietician had said that if I get my insulin levels in balance then the weight will come off. I'm looking forward to seeing these results. It is not a fast weight loss plan. Rather a meal design that is all about balancing veggie carbs, lean protein, and good fats for overall health.

Losing some weight already

I bought this with Mastering the Zone. I needed to change my eating habits because I end up having to take steroids a lot because I have churg-strauss syndrome. With steroids comes weight gain. It's horrible! I always try to limit what I eat when I am on them, but it just never seems to work, and the weight just keeps piling on. I started this summer at 118, and I got up to 138, which is a lot for me because I am very small. I started following the concepts in this book, and I have already lost 6 pounds in about 2 weeks. I have always had a fast metabolism, but the steroids like shut it off. It's like this program has kicked my metabolism back into gear. The great thing is is that I am never hungry. The calorie count is down, but the amount of food compensates for that by using more fruits and vegetables. I feel great, and the steroids aren't winning anymore.

The one eating program that really, really works.

If you have a weight problem, bad eating habits, or feel like the food you eat gives you more problems than it's supposed to, then this is the book for you. I had problems with my weight, very poor acne-prone skin and very low energy levels since I was fourteen. I tried every program and diet I could find, and the most weight I ever lost, without downright starving myself, was about 10 pounds over a period of four to six months. I was always depressed and anxious over dieting, and most diets worked horrors for my immunological system, energy, skin, hair and nails. By following the Zone as explained in this book, although making my own Zone recipes, I have lost eight pounds in two weeks and feel better than ever. I haven't gotten sick, my energy levels are soaring, and I'm eating the foods I like without ever being hungry. The condition of my skin, hair and nails is at an all-time best.
The Zone is a very easy to follow eating plan, (I was used to it by the third day) based on combining different foods in the proportions that add up the amount of proteins, carbohydrates and fat you should consume at each meal. By making use of meal timing it insures proper delivery of the nutrients to your body, and by including a couple of Zone balanced snacks between meals, it minimizes carbohydrate cravings and hunger.
The book is very easy to understand. C# here I come!!

First, I have to say you'll learn more in a class than you will from any book. I plan on taking classes for C# sometime in the future.

Now, to the review. I've always liked for dummies books. Not because I think I'm a dummy, but because I absolutely love the way they are laid out. The simplistic speech in them, and not to mention the way they take it very slow. This is what I love about them. If I had to pick something I don't like about them... It's the comics. The comics are... Well, not great. (Usually not funny. Sometimes an ironic chuckle... But usually not that great.)

Now to the heart of the review. It's not possible to learn C# from this or any book, but it is possible to learn the fundamentals. The for dummies book does a great job of laying out how to put down code, what different instances do, telling about ifs and thans and also making good use of coding best practices... My pet peeve is messy non-indented code, and this book shows not to do that. (You could, but it looks ugly... Don't code ugly!!!)

So, if you want to learn some simple basics of code, coding practices, and what certain instances do this book will give you a better understanding of how to deal with code and what goes on under the hood. But if you think it will teach you what a year of a programming class will... Think again. There is no magic book available online that will do that. (Unless you got a textbook.) XD

All in all this gets 5 stars because I enjoy learning and this actually does teach!

Good book for VB programmers

Although the "Dummies" title implies a "Beginner" book, this book falls into the "Beginner to Intermediate Developer" range. This is a good book for Visual Basic developers who want to make the conversion to C# or for the beginner. Like all Dummies series, there are ample examples and the author does a great job of explaining the C# language. Windows forms are covered in Chapter 17 and 18 but there is no discussion about Web development or using C# with Active Server Pages (ASP).
Starting in Chapter 6 (Collecting Data - The Class and the Array) there are several really annoying errors, for example, on page 105 the author uses "for (int i = 0; i < 11; i++)" to iterate thru a 10 element array. In the section below this (Array bounds checking), the author uses exactly the same code and says this will fail. The first code should be "for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++)". These errors are scattered through out the book. Still this is a good book and I would highly recommend it.

Good Book for VB Migrators

C# For Dummies claims to take novice programmers into the world of C#. That's probably a stretch--if you haven't programmed before, I suspect you would have a tough time keeping up. But as an experienced VB programmer moving to C#, I have found it quite helpful. Easy, breezy read, with a focus on the language itself (rather than .Net framework classes or Visual Studio). Most programs are console apps, although the book walks the reader through creation of a Windows app. Only negatives: Code on CD doesn't always match up with cook listings (as at p. 261). Also, like most Dummies books, it's a bit light on learning exercises for the reader. I'm using the book as a general introduction to the language, before I dig into more detailed texts.
