There are five items in my wardrobe I cannot live without. The cornerstones I rely upon to make newer, weirder clothing look OK. Without them I would be lost.

My relationship with my denim hotpants is incredibly special. I pack them in my hand luggage when I travel because I fear that one day we will be separated and I will be forced to go out bottomless forevermore because no other shorts will ever be able to replace them. Since the day I found them lurking in a Brixton charity shop we have become so inseparable that even when I take them off they still retain the shape of my bum as they lie on my bedroom floor. I use them to dress down a flashy top, as a practical alternative to muddy trousers at festivals, and over the years have cut them shorter and shorter so that they are now borderline obscene (they keep getting cheekier). Until the denim disintegrates and falls off me, these particular hotpants are here to stay.

A navy blue jumper is potentially the most boring item anyone could design and yet it’s my most important possession. The one I own belongs to an ex-boyfriend, and before shops caught on and made ‘boyfriend-fit jeans’ and ‘boyfriend sweaters’ everyone was happily throwing on their actual boyfriend’s belongings to keep warm. I have never travelled without it and it has rescued me from many mornings of outfit panic. Once when I was heartbroken a male friend of mine sent me his navy cashmere jumper to wear as a perpetual hug to cheer me up. It worked.

My Burberry trench coat is something I saved up for a long time to buy. When I wear it I feel like a French detective from the sixties. Yet I love how quintessentially British it is, in that it’s practical yet proper. It was either this or a cagoule. I think I made the right choice.

Every woman needs s a transportable receptacle to shove her collection of clutter into, and as much as I love some It Bag arm candy I am just as happy to pile everything into a canvas tote. Sometimes I wish I could live like a man and fit everything I need into a single back pocket but that’s never going to happen and besides, then I would lose out on the daily drama that occurs when I think I’ve lost something and have to tip the contents of my bag out only to discover my phone is in my hand. I think a canvas tote bag is as classic as a Chanel 2.55 and the bonus is you can shove it in a washing machine without having a mental breakdown.

I thought I could narrow it down to five items I couldn’t live without but I can’t, so: ankle boots because you can wear them with literally anything. A pair of Wayfarer sunglasses—wear at night to seem extra aloof. Ballet flats—I can’t dance but that doesn’t stop me from trying. Dungarees—it’s fine that only toddlers and me like these. A white shirt—a no-brainer.

There's Nothing to "It"

Wow! What a mess and a huge mistake by me (and Alexa).
I expected so much more and was left with a feeling that Alexa Chung and her friends need a huge reality check.

I usually love books like this and was expecting something along the lines of 'Rookie Yearbook One' by Tavi Gevinson or 'The Goddess Guide' by Gisele Scanlon - one of my all time favourite books.

I'm 19 and when I heard Alexa was writing a book I thought that's my Christmas list sorted but unfortunately no. If it were even a tiny bit more like The Goddess Guide with drawings and photographs and personal stories I'd have given it another star but unfortunately I've found nothing to date as cool for art, photography and super smart writing.

Also I don't like the "It" title. What does "It" mean?

It seems that "It" is devoid of any reality....

John Crace's 'Digested Read' in The Guardian, reviewed 'It' and summed up exactly how I feel here after 1 hour of frustrated reading...

I still love Alexa on TV but I'm afraid from now on I'll give her books a miss.

Unfortunately on this occasion she comes across as sycophantic and rather uncool. There's very little to champion here : ( and it's also too expensive.

I hate being so negative but "It" is a huge disappointment. : (

I LOVE YOU ALEXA, BUT WHYYY?

As soon as I heard that Alexa Chung was writing a book I jumped on amazon and pre-ordered. I wish her book had more substance. Reading her book was a painful experience. She is an amazing host and has amazing style... Maybe she should stick to what she knows best. The book is aesthetically pleasing. The pictures makeup for the lack of effort that seems to have gone into the writing. After reading this book I felt I wasted my money.

I really love Alexa's style and everything about her. That's why it's soooo painful for me to say that it was kind of (totally) painful to read. Take all her instagram and facebook pics and posts, print them and charge $25 for it. that's what this book is all about.

About the Author
Robert V. S. Redick's The Red Wolf Conspiracy was a finalist for the 2008 Locus Award for Best First Novel, and according to SFX magazine, one of the top ten science fiction and fantasy releases of the year. Book II of this series, The Ruling Sea, was rated the #1 fantasy of 2009 by Fantasy Book Critic. A former international development researcher, Redick worked most recently for the antipoverty organization Oxfam. He lives in western Massachusetts.

Redick Keeps Getting Better

Redick just continues to hone his craft, and The River of Shadows is a beautiful piece of literature. The Chathrand Voyage series is my second favorite series of all-time (Rothfuss' Kingkiller series is my #1 all-time favorite). Redick has an incredible ability to suck you into this world that is engrossing, intriguing, and consuming. His characters are well-developed and complex; relatable, likable, yet flawed (but not so much that you dislike them, which is often the case these days). And this applies to all of the characters in these books...there just aren't many un-developed or under-developed characters. Each has its own unique identity, character, strengths, flaws, etc. The world is brilliantly realized and sucks you in completely.

Those things are all true of each of the books of this series. Each one can stand on its own, but are definitely part of a larger whole. The overall story being told here is interesting and it has a lot of great twists and turns...very few of them predictable, and all of them add to the story and keep your interest. Redick is great at plotting. The pace moves quickly, but he knows how to balance the fast-paced "action" scenes with the scenes of reflection...a good balance between the "fantastic" and the "mundane" (a better word might be "realistic"). Holywood movies could learn a lot from Redick about how to craft a story.

This book is fantastic. Should you read the first two books in the series before reading this? It's not necessary, I don't think...there's enough of a summation of the earlier books included herein (though not so much that I was annoyed, as I often am when the beginning of a sequel spends 1/4 of itself rehashing what has already happened in the previous volumes). But, it's hard for me to gauge that, since I HAVE read the first two books. Here's what I can say for sure...it would be well worth it to read the first two books anyway. All three are absolutely fantastic. Redick has an incredible talent, and these books are truly among the best out there. Highly, highly recommended!

Series Falters in This Third Volume

After perusing the reviews for this title, I realize that my poor opinion of this novel is in the minority. While I am almost finished with this book, I am struggling to complete it and do not know whether to persevere until the end. There are other novels I am eager to get to, and this one is just not up to par.

The first book in the series, The Red Wolf Conspiracy, was very enjoyable. The second book, The Ruling Sea, was not quite as good, but it was ok. This third volume, however, is not very good for several reasons. First, the plot has become too convoluted. The main plot involves the struggle of the main characters against the evil mage, Arunis, who seeks to obtain the Nilstone, a dark magical object that has the power to destroy the world. This novel finds the great ship Chathrand in the lands to the south of the Ruling Sea that have been long unknown to the people of the north. The author doles out information about these lands stingily, thus not filling out the setting of this novel very well.

The author keeps introducing subplots that are not well developed. The character Felthrup, a talking, intelligent rat, learns to enter a dreamworld called the River of Shadows. Later in the novel, the main characters must leave the great ship on a quest to find the earthly entrance to the River of Shadows so they can stop Arunis' evil plans. Another part of the plot involves the reception that the humans receive from the empire in the south, Bali Adro. Humans have lost their intelligence and ability to speak in these lands and have become little more than animals. The southern empire has been hijacked by evil mages and has become obsessed with conquering the world. While all of these plotlines may eventually fit into the story as it is written, the whole novel could really use some tightening up. The plotting feels neither coherent nor cohesive.

The characterization in this novel is well-done at times, but is weak overall. Some characters disappear for long stretches of the novel, only to reappear briefly as central to the story or a subplot. One example is Neda, the long-lost sister of one of the main characters, Pazel. After she was introduced, I thought she would become a major character, but she has scarcely been mentioned since reuniting with her brother. He hardly ever mentions her. You would think that he would show more concern for her after finding her again. There seems to be no point to her storyline.

While this is just one small example, it is indicative of the whole novel. There seems to be a lot of extraneous characters and plot lines that either go nowhere or are inadequately developed. Pacing suffers, with nothing of note happening for long stretches in the story (at least it seems that way). The character interaction and dialogue is annoying and illogical at times. The author seems to create conflict among the main characters when none is necessary, and it just jarring and irritating to the reader, rather than necessary to the story.

Like many fantasy series that started off great, e.g., The Song of Fire and Ice, The Wheel of Time, The Sword of Truth, The Sword of Shadows, this series seems to have stumbled under its own weight. Ultimately, I felt that this book had serious problems, and those problems kept me from enjoying it. I cannot recommend this novel, even to fans of the series.

At least they finally get off the effing ship

I really enjoyed the first volume in this series (The Red Wolf Conspiracy) tremendously. It was a fresh-feeling story, had a lot of energy, some interesting characters, and a relatively intricate plot. In the second novel (The Ruling Sea), the plot seemed to go from intricate to pointlessly complex. The Ruling Sea also suffered from having the characters cooped up on a ship, which seemed to limit the direction the story could go in (although there have been very good novels set entirely on a ship).

By the time I got into The River of Shadows, I find I'm just tired of the whole thing. The parade of extraneous, and in many cases barely distinguishable, characters. The endless series of confrontations with the main bad guys that end anticlimactically (as they can't be wrapped up, since we've got at least one more book in the series!).

This volume in the series feels like the middle seasons of the television show "Lost," where big circular plotlines were added to pad out what was intended to be a 1- or 2-season run. I'm done.

Buyer Beware

Rulon S. Howells did a wonderful job with this book, hence the many reprints and editions over the years. It is well know for its awsome comparative chart of the different christian faiths. After searching several book stores for used and out of print versions of the book I found that many of the "comparative chart inserts" were missing from the older copies. Since I wanted the book AND ESPECIALLY his well know chart I was overjoyed to see that amazon offered the newly published hardback edition as recent as November of 2008! However, NO CHART! If you read the editorial review that talks about the chart insert, AND figure that you are buying a brand new book for 41 dollars!!!! you would think that the purchase would have included the foldout insert! How presumptuous of me. Sheesh. One should also know that this was a shotty quick photo copy of an older version and in some places still has the underlining and scribbles in it that were photocopied along with it! For 41 dollars! Thank you Amazon. You're better off just searching the used book store data bases and finding a "Very Good" copy where the seller lets you know that the chart is not missing. That is what I finally did. Got my chart, got my book, and for a lot less money that 41 bucks! (Fabulous reference book by the way!)

Straight forward

In 2011 this book is starting to show its age. Some of the core beliefs of some of the religions reviewed have changed since the book was published in 1940; though certain long establish churches still adhere to the key doctrines laid out in this book. (Some have even further divided.) It is also interesting that the issued discussed today in public about religion has changed over the years. This book never touches on anything sexual or of medical ethics; which seem to dominate the religious conversations these days. The book is well sourced and each chapter is laid out in a pattern of providing historical background about the church, doctrine, any divisions in the sect, and then concludes with an overview of the churches organization and governmental structure.

The churches are discussed in an alphabetical order. This is done for fairness but it can be a bit confusing since as you read you can be bouncing back in forth through historical time. You could read the book in an orderly fashion if you start with chapter 15 (Roman Catholic) then chapter 10 (Eastern Orthodox) then move to chapter 12 (Lutheran)... well then you have to know what order the different churches start. There is a very good chapter that lays out the creeds (Apostles, Nicene, and Athanasian). But the book is not the end all but an excellent introduction to the basic faiths of major christian religions.

There is one comment here on Amazon that states the book makes a conclusion about which church is true. This is a false statement. Although Mr. Howells is a Mormon there is nothing in the book or on the chart that ever makes any such conclusion. The book lays out the doctrines and makes no attempt to make any conclusions. That is left for the reader. Even the chapter on Mormons covers some historical facts about divisions among Mormons, something most of them would rather forget. Mr. Howells tries, and I think succeeds, to be totally subjective.

This does present a few good ideas such as ways of keeping on task to accomplish your goals and reading accounting reports. It also has some good ideas regarding attitude which can be summed up as "will those who claim that it can't be done get out of the way of those who are doing it?"

However, it is so poorly edited and organized that it was next to impossible to read or make sense out of. Hardly a good example of sound business practice - other than to get your money. But, at least it attempts to provide a product.

I took great exception that they claimed Mother Theresa did not believe in God and neither should their reader. They claim their proof to be that she stopped talking and reading about him after 50 years of service. Not proof if you ask me.

Don't waste your time. Buy other books which show how to read a financial statement.

A Truly Magical Book On Watercolour

David Taylors Artwork and Ron Ransons commentary combine to produce an outstanding work on watercolour painting. David has the ability to simplify the most complex scene into a magical piece of artwork: displaying bold brush strokes with the ability to get it right first time; His use of positive and negative space is brilliant, clearly showing an understanding of watercolour and how to bring out the very essence of his chosen subjects so beautifully.
I found the book inspiring me to greater achievement in my own painting and continually enjoy Ron's script its humour and the simple way he points the way, teaching through Davids work.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in watercolour, it teaches so much about the medium - it truly does go a long long way to solving the mystery of watercolour in a most enjoyable way.

Simply a great book

In terms of painting style Taylor brings together the best elements of several artists to produce a classic impressionistic fresh watercolor style. The instructional material by Ron Ransom is extremely helpful. It even has a couple of pages in how to depict traffic in cityscapes! I also love Taylor's sensible 15 color palette (not too large, not to restricted) and how he employs it. No tricks--no pouring, salt, collage, stamping--just great loose on site plein air brushwork from a master. Somewhat similar in style to Mel Stabin or John Yardley.

Beautiful bold and loose style.

David Taylor's watercolor style is beautifully bold and loose. Ron Ranson has done a good production with this book, the illustrations are beautiful and many of them are really breathtaking. Taylor captures accurately the mood of the chosen subjects even with great economy of brushstrokes. The chapter of composition/design is the best depicted, with clear explanations and examples, however other sections are written with a lesser tutorial style. My main remark on this book is about a careless (intentional?) treatment of two illustrations: Page 26 shows a plate that is repeated with a different title on page 32 (there are some differences in color saturation and contrast that suggest digital manipulation). Illustrations on pages 117 and 127 are dealt in the same manner. Besides, the illustration of the dustjacket is not included inside the book. Nevertheless, this is one of the best books on watercolor that have been issued lately and we have had the chance to appreciate the artwork of this excellent Australian artist.

Grade 9 Up–In a clear, objective narrative, Hillman (called by her German name, Hannelore, in the book) describes her life from April 1942, as a student at a private school in Berlin, until the German surrender in April 1945 that freed her from a detention camp. After her father's death, she left school and was deported with her mother and brothers to Poland. During her three years of captivity she was moved to several labor and concentration camps. Her inclusion on Oskar Schindler's list led, finally, to her deportation to the Br�nnlitz camp in Czechoslovakia, where Jewish prisoners were treated humanely. At the fourth detention camp–Budzyn–Hannelore met the man who would become her husband. Her growing love and concern for him; her strong instinct for survival; and her endurance in the face of deprivation, inhumane conditions, and near-starvation provide considerable inspiration. Several photos of family members are included, along with a map that clearly indicates the locations of the camps in which Hannelore was held prisoner. *Starred Review* Gr. 8-11. There are many YA Holocaust memoirs, but few of them deal with a teenager's survival in the concentration camps. That makes Hillman's affecting account particulalry noteworthy. In 1942 Berlin, Hannelore, 16, bravely volunteers to be deported with her mother and two younger brothers to Poland. Of course, they are soon separated, and during the next three years Hannelore is moved through eight concentration camps. In clipped, first-person narrative, she remembers the worst: crammed cattle cars; backbreaking work from stone quarries to salt mines; beatings; hunger; her own rape; the smell of children's bodies in the crematoria. She tells it as she endured it, quietly relaying the facts without sensationalism or sentimentality. She remembers making friends, one of whom is beaten to death because of a relationship with a German soldier. Hannelore herself falls in love with a young prisoner, Dick. At the end of the book is a photo of the lovers reunited and married; no one else in the family photos survived. The author never fully explains how she and Dick get onto Schindler's list, which saves them from Auschwitz (an explanatory note about the list would have been helpful), but the arbitrariness of the list was as true to the Holocaust survival experience as the loss. Thus appears one glimmer of hope in Hannelore Wolff's harrowing odyssey through eight labor and concentration camps, facing a rape, the death of a brother, lice, scarlet fever and near starvation. Yet, her story becomes one of courage and love and luck in the harshest of times. She falls in love with fellow prisoner Dick Hillman, who's involved with the Czech partisans in the countryside, and they help each other keep hope alive. They indeed make Schindler's list and survive until liberation, soon thereafter marrying and making their way to New York City. Hillman, born Hannelore Wolff, has written a memoir of astonishing power, told in plain, clear prose, even more powerful for its matter-of-fact tone. Devastated when I finished it

This was one of those books I never wanted it to end. I was devastated . Even though it was fiction, I know I learned a whole lot about France in World War 2. The author was able to get me fully connected to every character even with the 75 year gap. I fully recommend this book to anyone. You will be part of their family, you will be brave, in love,in hate, and under the rein of Hitler and his army.

EXCELLENT READ. THE HOLOCAUST DID HAPPEN, AND IT WAS DISGRACE TO MANKIND. WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO BELIEVE IN THE WAY WE WANT. I WAS TAUGHT BY MY PASTOR THAT WHEN YOU START POINTING YOUR FINGER TO SOMEONE ELSE, JUST TURN IT AROUND TO YOURSELF. IT SEEMS FROM THE BEGINNING OF TIME, THERE HAVE BEEN SCAPEGOATS. THE 3 MAIN RELIGIONS OF THE WORLD ALL CLAIM FATHER ABRAHAM.
