Cathy Byrd is a busy realtor and mother of two young children who never had aspirations of becoming a writer until her son began sharing vivid memories of being a baseball player in the 1920s and ‘30s. When she is not busy writing or selling homes, the most likely place to find Cathy is on a baseball field in Southern California.

RICK “SHAQ” GOLDSTEIN SAYS: “WHEN I WAS BIG I DIDN’T WEAR SEAT BELTS, AND I DRANK ALCOHOL”

This true life story about two-year-old California youth Christian Haupt and his claim that he was baseball immortal and Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig in a previous life… is well told by the author… his Mother…. Cathy Byrd. The fact that this first time author lays out the facts in an extremely logical fashion… and authentically… discusses her fears of being laughed at… treated like a whack-job… and facing the possibility of her family being ostracized by her community… is very smart… AND… realistic. Before I go further in my review… which will include much positive… and a little negative…. I want to stress why I have an open mind about subjects such as the re-incarnation/previous life theories. I am a brain tumor survivor… and I almost died during surgery fourteen years ago. I had a NDE/FDE (near-death-fear-death) experience. And like the author it’s human nature to be very careful who you attempt to share your experience with. Like the author… some friends you thought would have an open mind… laugh you out of their house or ridicule you. So I fully appreciate her care and research and the way she builds her case. But there are a few things in the book (some not directly related to the main point of the previous life of Lou Gehrig… but just the baseball story itself.) that… to a true lifelong baseball fan… a Dodger fan at that… from my birth in Brooklyn seeing Jackie and the Boys of Summer play… and then our Dodger loving family actually moving from New York to Los Angeles the same year as our beloved “Bums” that don't seem logical!
The author exudes great care in pro-actively attacking what doubters may say… by explaining in great detail… how certain comments regarding Lou Gehrig’s life that emanate from young Christian’s mouth could not have been overheard in the house because no one in the house knew almost anything about baseball. Christian’s Father was born in Germany and had no interest in baseball and Cathy claimed total ignorance regarding our national pastime. One part of the story… unrelated to Lou Gehrig that didn’t ring true to me… was after Christian became a baseball prodigy… appeared in an Adam Sandler movie… and the whole family ( even Dad) started going to Dodger games… started watching Dodger games on TV… threw out the first pitch at a Dodger game.. in 2012 the big league players “inspired us to become Dodger season-ticket holders.” With that declaration of dedication and claim of being a committed Dodger fanatic… two pages later it is stated that “two color photos of Christian’s first pitch at the Pepperdine University game showed up on the cover of The Malibu Tines newspaper the following week with the headline “Watch Your Back Clayton Kershaw…. And the author writes: “WE HAD NO IDEA WHO CLAYTON KERSHAW WAS AT THE TIME, BUT EASILY DEDUCED THAT HE MUST HAVE BEEN A PITCHER FOR THE DODGERS.”
How can that whole scenario be true? The reader was just told that they were baseball and Dodger fanatics… watching every game… getting season tickets in 2012. In 2011 Clayton Kershaw was the best pitcher in baseball… in 2011 he won the Cy Young Award! How can you have immersed your entire life in the Dodgers and not know who Clayton Kershaw was in 2012???
Meanwhile back at the Big Lou / Christian reincarnation. It was enjoyable as a baseball fan… and as a Grandfather who still has the heart of a child… to read the things that would pop out of Christian’s mouth in different settings regarding his prior life as “The Iron Horse”. The legendary feud between teammates Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig is well known by true old-school fans… but the intensity that was channeled through a two through six-year-old child through the course of the book was perhaps the best part of the book. When Cathy took Christian to a game at Fenway Park and he went crazy with hatred when he saw a big picture of Babe Ruth at the stadium was a classic. When Christian was five-years-old she asked him if he remembered being married when he was Lou Gehrig. “His response was not what you would expect to hear from a five-year-old.” “She drank alcohol and there was a lot of yelling, like Babe Ruth.” “The last words out of his mouth before falling asleep were, “Lou should have never married that dumb lady. She was a drunk.”
Where the enjoyable… quirky… well laid out story… in my opinion goes a little out of kilter (not a spoiler… just a section scenario subject… that must be discussed in a review) is when the author enters “past life regression” therapy and believes she was Lou Gehrig’s Mother in a prior life. I’m not saying all of this won’t be proven true one day… but perhaps that should have been in a subsequent book… and simply let the world accept Christian as The Yankee Iron Horse first.

The return of Lou Gehrig

Cathy Byrd touched my heart with this book and her concerns for her son Christian who remembers a past life. I began reading this book and didn't put it down until the wee hours of the morning. I finished it within 24 hours. I found myself captivated by a child who recalls life as Lou Gehrig and the details he reveals. The resulting search to validate his recollections, an interesting history of baseball itself, and especially the 1927 New York Yankee team enthralled me!

Fascinating Read!

A fascinating book that I read straight though. I'm a Christian who believes in the long journey of the soul and the importance of learning and growing and loving while on Earth.
At times, what I found most unbelievable (said tongue-in-cheek because it was really admirable) was the mother's dedication to playing baseball with her child and allowing him to be himself. If Christian had been my son, he wouldn't have faired so well because I wouldn't have wanted to play baseball (very often) or go to many games. Her life became baseball because his life was baseball.
I think it was brave to offer up such a personal story, knowing that many will tear it apart. I hope the author will be able to focus on the positive reviews and ignore the negative ones.
