Precise and passionate historical writing at its finest

This is an ideal read for anyone with an interest in World War II and its aftermath. Rivera performs the gritty, yet essential work of a seasoned historian to frame Truman and his monumental decision(s) in the pantheon of historical figures who have not been properly appreciated. History is the constant process of revision in the present and Rivera's text reminds us of this essential fact. The writing is clear, clean, and informative. There are countless ways to pass away Sunday afternoon; you will be best served by spending one with this book.

An important part of America's history!

This was an easy to read book. The author gave enough,detail about President Truman and all the relevant parties that the reader knows why they're important but does not inundate the reader with unnecessary detail.The language is quite accessible and unpretentious. I highly recommend it. As part of the baby boomer generation, I found this part of our history amazing! Most probably, if it was not for Truman's decision, there would not be the America we have today! I also admire my dad, which wrote this book and is now officially a Late Bloomer! Go Dad!

Worthwhile read for President Truman fans

Great historical and worthwhile read! Rivera brings this momentous decision to life. President Truman
was courageous in the face of competing inputs and choices and prepared the world for peace following a horrific war.
I especially liked the background on Japanese culture and the explanation on deification of the Emperor as it had a huge
impact on their conduct of war. Rivera almost seemed to prepare a legal brief supporting the greatness of President Truman.

About the Author
Rene Daumal (1908-1944) was one of the most original thinkers of the twentieth century; a poet, philosopher, and scholar of religion and Sanskrit. In his late-teens his avant-garde poetry was published in leading journals, and barely in his twenties, as a counter to Surrealism and Dadaism, he founded a literary journal, Le Grand Jeu. He wrote many essays on religion and philosophy, trained himself in Oriental languages, and engaged in drug experiments. He died of tuberculosis in 1944, at the age of thirty-six.

Astonishingly Timeless

A NIGHT OF SERIOUS DRINKING is an amazing, short novel written by Rene Daumal in French in 1938 and translated into English in 1978. It has now been reissued thanks to the vision of TUSK IVORIES, a publishing house committed to restoring classic books from Europe, Asia, and Latin America, books that are profoundly important but happen to disappear off the shelves of bookstores.
Rene Daumal was a poet, writer and philosopher who preceeded the Beat Generation by twenty some years, writing about the absurdity of life as we are leading it. His title "Night.." refers metaphorically to the thirst we have to make sense of a world of endless intoxication. He introduces characters/types who drown themselves in alcohol in order to expound on fantasy ideas of the meaning of life. He then takes us on a "utopian tour" of life as a fantastical house dismembered and reassembled in a bizarre series of levels of sci-fi porportions - an artificial Paradise which peels away to a Kafkaesque, rotten core. He finally addresses the pie-in-the-sky concept of mythology and religion as a means of purification/evolution only to call forth his fellow drinking partners to wake up to the possibility of change. For all the surreal maelstrom of his intoxicated revelation of society as we are living it, Daumal makes his narrator introduce hope 'seeing the myriad atoms of possibility'.
This is a profound little book that is richly written, understands the use of metaphor, and calls us to step out of the dark hole of depression to view the 'available light' in the future. Not a one-read book, this little treasure asks to be re-visited frequently. And now, thanks to Tusk Ivories, we can.

As the party becomes intoxicated and more and more exuberant, the narrator embarks on a journey ranging from seeming paradises to the depths of pure hell.

The fantastic world depicted in A Night of Serious Drinking is actually the ordinary world turned upside down. This textbook is one of the best I have had to read from so far in my college experience. It has very helpful chapter introductions that define and explain any terms that are used in that particular chapter. It also includes several different media into these introductions, with many having comic strips, surveys, or polls. It really helped me understand what feminism really is and why it is important. If you are dreading having to work with this book for one of your classes, dont! Some of the readings are long and dry but very informational. Most though, are enjoyable to read, whether they are poetry, real life experiences, or web articles. Definitely recommend this book!

Pretty good textbook, not too dry, very helpful!

My husband had to get this for a college class and it has been very useful for the quizzes he's had to take as well as the writing reflections. Pretty well organized and accessible. Not too dense or dry like so many textbooks can be, interesting content for those already well versed in the subject. Yet for those that are somehow not in the know of the struggle for equality still to this day for women and many groups of people it is an eye opener.

Personally I like the cover too but in the end it's the content of course that matters most!

It's a textbook but a fairly good one. Renting it is how we did it and that seems to be the best way to go unless you intend to go into this as a major then you may want to own a copy.

"Leonardo of Pisa's Liber Abaci (Book of Calculation) is one of the most important books in the history of European mathematics. Leonardo learned his mathematics from the Islamic mathematical tradition (some have even argued that he should be considered part of that tradition), but he wrote his books in Latin. As a result, he became one of the most important mediators of that tradition to European readers.

The Liber Abaci focused on "calculation." From our point of view, most of the contents are either arithmetic or algebra. It starts off with an extensive and detailed discussion of the use of "the nine Indian figures" to represent numbers and to perform arithmetical operations with them. The "nine figures" are, of course, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9, with 0 being treated as a separate sign. The book then goes on to deal with a large number of problems that we would describe as algebraic. Most of these reduce to linear equations (this includes systems of linear equations and also linear diophantine equations). The final chapter discusses quadratic equations. All of this is done, of course, without any sort of algebraic symbolism.

As Heinz Lueneberg has pointed out in a recent issue of FOCUS, this is an amazing book, and it is somewhat frustrating that we had to wait for the 800th anniversary of its original publication to see an English translation. But here it is at last, the Liber Abaci in English. It is now possible for mathematicians who are interested in history to read it, and for students to read portions of it in their history courses.

One final comment: attentive readers will note that the name "Fibonacci" does not occur in this brief review. That is because Leonardo never used that name: it is a nickname given to him by a 19th century historian of mathematics. I'm enough of a purist to want to refer to Leonardo as he referred to himself: Leonardo of Pisa, of the Bonacci family. He was a great mathematician, and here is an accessible and readable edition of his most famous book. Don't miss the opportunity to get a copy."

First published in 1202, Fibonacci's Liber abaci was one of the most important books on mathematics in the Middle Ages, introducing Arabic numerals and methods throughout Europe. Though it is known as an introduction to the Hindu number system and the algorithms of arithmetic that children now learn in grade school, "Liber abaci" is much more: an encyclopaedia of thirteenth-century mathematics, both theoretical and practical. It develops the tools rigorously, establishing them with Euclidean geometric proofs, and then shows how to apply them to all kinds of situations in business and trade - conversion of measures and currency, allocations of profit, computation of interest, alloying of currencies, and so forth. It is rigorous mathematics, well applied, and vividly described.

An amazing read

A great read on the 13th century mathematical concepts and methods used. As this book was instrumental to the introduction of the modern number system the explanations of the base10 number system are excellent.

I know a fair bit about maths but found some gems of information and more importantly this book gave context to some other concepts.

A must read in my opinion to anyone who cares about maths.

We are sinking fast passengers being put into boats

Alfred Fernand Omont, a first class passenger, offered this statement to the British Commission of Enquiry:

"While I was still on the boat deck, a [life] boat was let down. The 1st officer saw me and asked me if I wanted to get in. Some of the passengers shouted to me not to get in as they had such confidence in the ship. I saw that the sea was very calm, and on calm reason I thought it better to jump into the boat and see what would happen. I jumped two or three yards, and landed in the boat anyhow. We were twenty nine in the boat. The boat could not have held more than thirty in any case. I personally consider and state that the idea of putting sixty people in a boat or on a raft is ridiculous. I have a photograph in my possession which shows how ridiculous it is to attempt to put 50 or sixty persons in one of these boats or rafts. I consider it a monstrosity to state that one could put 60 persons in a boat, in safety. . . .

Excellent primary source historical information.

If what you like are action, adventure, and dramatic illistrations, this is not for you. If you want a contemporary view, to hold history in your hand and be brought back to 1912, this is most definately for you. Yet there is a certain emotion in examening Titanic's registration, her survey report, the port by port clearance papers of newly embarked passengers, and the other narratives and reports. The Harland and Wolff plans are the best I have yet found, while the 74 page report of the British Court of Investigation is fascinating, if somewhat dry, reading, from both a technical and human perspective. This is a must, not only for serious Titanic people, but for anyone interested in the history of the era.

I received this item as a gift many years ago, and I have preserved it since. It is truly a collectors item for its wealth of information pertaining to the Titanic disaster. There are 18 documents (don't let the number fool you into thinking that is minimal) of full reproductions of all the pertinent information concerning the tragedy.

A full introductory bulletin spanning 15 pages which beautifully illustrates the box contents. In addition to a brief summary of the maiden voyage, there is information on "further reading", a little blurb on each item in the box set, and an appendix of "Particulars of Ships Built By Harland and Wolff-Entries for the Olympic and Titanic."

A fascinating window into the life of a German pre-feminist

Fanny Lewald is an engaging and provocative author whose autobiography is much more than just the story of her life. The broad scope of this book (politics, art, religion, philosophy)comes from Lewald's varied interests and own deep involvement in her tumultuous times. Germany and Europe as whole were going through lots of changes--revolutions in many fields--and Lewald participated in many of them and was a perceptive and thoughtful observer of all of them.
The book is beautifully and sensitively translated, making it a pleasure to read.
