Decent book--get a hardcopy

This book is a useful means of understanding the Discourse-Historical Approach to Critical Discourse Analysis. However, all of the charts in the Kindle version are out of focus, so I would recommend obtaining a hardcopy.

Also, this is not an introductory text, so if you do not have a background in discourse analysis, you may become overwhelmed. Overall, I wouldn't consider this text to be one of my favorites, but I haven't found many others on DHA, and this book is a useful resource.

The importance of the IOS concept is beginning to be acknowledged in the literature of empirical accounting, finance, and management. There, the investment opportunity set is introduced as an explanatory or moderating variable of the relationship between accounting and economic phenomena and various predictor variables. Riahi-Belkaoui explicates a concept of growth opportunities or IOS (Chapter 1) and provides a general model for its measurement (Chapter 2). He shows its role in a general valuation model based on dividend yield and price earnings ratio (Chapter 3), in the relationship between profitability and multinationality (Chapter 4), in the determination of capital structure (Chapter 5), in a general model of international production (Chapter 6), in a general model of corporate disclosure (Chapter 7), in the relationship between systematic risk and multinationality (Chapter 8), in a model of reputation building (Chapter 9), and earnings management (Chapter 10). He goes on to discuss its role in explaining the relative market value compared to the accounting value of a multinational firm in Chapter 11, and in differentiating between the usefulness of accrual and cash flow based on valuation models in Chapter 12.

Required For School

This is typical college pushed media. This is directed at the softer, gentler society that lives in a dream world. There is tons of political agenda pushed throughout the book that has little to do with management. It is no wonder that kids hit the work place with their heads implanted elsewhere. The book reviews some aspects of history that is so slanted it will make you puke if you know the difference. Take each account and do some real research and you will see why this book is shaping political minds not business intelligence! Pretty sad!

Gupta, a small-business development and strategy consultant and freelance business journalist, examines the venture capital industry through interviews of 35 of its major players. He looks at the early venture capitalists and contrasts them with today's notable players. He also explains the historical distinction between the East Coast group and the West Coast, Silicon Valley practitioners, with the former emphasizing financial engineering to gain tax benefits and financial returns, whereas those in the West take a chance on a fledgling technology and nurture the scientist. However, this distinction has blurred as the industry rapidly grows. Interviews include representatives of the newest incarnation of venture capitalists, famous names from both the East and West Coasts, and future visionaries. This is an interesting chronicle of an industry that 20 years ago invested $1 billion in portfolio companies and raised less than $700 million, and in 2000 is projected to both invest and raise new funds in excess of $30 billion. I opened this book with anticipation that I would be presented with an insightful examination of how the greats of the venture capital world worked with thier investments. What I found was a one-sided exploration about why these folks were great but not any of the grit that they must have faced to become the success that they are.

A great way to learn the who and what of the VC industry

While this book was written at the height of the Internet boom and contains nothing but some intimations of the subsequent crash (some of the VCs stated that they suspected returns would turn negative sometime in the near term), it is a fascinating capturing of the history of the venture capital industry in the words of those that built it. It is not a book on how to become a VC or how to submit your b-plan in a way to attract VC money. If you want books on getting investment money, I recommend - The Venture Capital Cycle - by Paul Gompers or for angel money - Angel Investing - by Mark Van Osnabrugge.

The book begins with a very short summary of the growth of the VC industry after WWII and then presents the VCs in five groups. It begins with the "Fast Forward" or the hot Internet and computer based VCs. Then come the "Beginnings" - the group after WWII that built the industry. A contrast is made with the next two groups, the East Coast versus the West Coast VCs. Finally, a group is presented in Visions.

Each of the VCs is presented with a little drawing in the WSJ style. I think this book is worthwhile just to get to know some of the big names, where they work - or used to work (there have been some changes since 2000) - and what projects these firms and people did. It can help in building professional associations let alone dinner conversation.

Is it a must read? I don't think so. However, if you are interested in the venture capital industry I think this would be a very good way to get some understanding of the terrain the industry has occupied and who some of the movers and shakers are (and were).
