Ilan Troen's Imagining Zion may well be the very most important book to appear in many years on patterns of Jewish settlement in Palestine/Israel. At a time when much discussion is devoted to Jewish settlement and, related to that, the very legitimacy of the Zionist enterprise in the Land of Israel, Troen's balanced and highly informative book is a must read. Thoroughly researched, lucidly written, and informed by an intimate familiarity with comparative materials (the author was an urban historian of the United States before switching to the history of the Yishuv), this book serves as a much needed corrective to the spate of essays that have recently appeared lining the modern state of Israel in most superficial ways to so-called settler states such as French Algeria and South Africa. In telling the compelling story of Zionist achievement, the author never loses sight of how the Jewish community in the Land of Israel envisioned the master plan of Zionist development and also took into consideration its impact on the indigenous Arab population. This highly nuanced and extremely informative book should attract audiences drawn from a wide range of academic disciplines. It is not only very timely, it has the virtue of being written in very accessible prose.

About the Author
Brainard Carey was born in Manhattan, New York, and grew up in Yonkers. After attending undergraduate art school at SUNY Purchase, he moved to Rhode Island and opened a gallery and began publishing a literary magazine. Carey then moved back to New York City, where he met Delia Bajo, and cofounded Praxis, which was invited to be in the Whitney Biennial in 2002 and to be in a solo show there in 2007, as well as other venues around the world. Carey also has a mentoring/ educational business that helps artists to write grants, exhibit, and advance their careers. He splits his time between New York City and a studio in New Haven, Connecticut, where he has a radio show on Yale radio WYBC called The Art World Demystified.

Practical, real, encouraging

Brainard Carey's "Art Mentor" emails were the most encouraging, relevant and practical art advice I have ever received. He is an invaluable resource when it comes to thinking beyond the canvas or the conventional. It is because of his ideas and perspective (be courageous, simply ask, develop relationships and community) that I launched a non-profit arts collective specifically targeting an ignored demographic. A year later we boast a small membership of 30 to 50 national and international dynamic females over the age of 40, we have a growing social media following and we have a familiar name within our Los Angeles arts community.

I don't think I would have had the courage, or downright audacity to what I am doing (and rather successfully) had I not had access to Brainard Carey. I believe his ideas and advice are some of the best and I wholeheartedly recommend this book to any artist at any level of their career. It truly is a must have for you library.

Really basic, mostly just common sense reminders.

I read this book with great anticipation for specific business insights into the art industry. I was hoping to get practical advice that would help me understand what needs to be considered and tackled to make a career shift to art. I got neither.

For context, I've got 20 years of business operations experience in high tech, but am looking to turn my weekend art hobby into a second career of sorts. Mentioning this b/c my perspective might be different than others reading this book without much hands-on business experience, i.e. what struck me as common sense might not be the case for others.

For example, the author assumes you don't have any basic writing skills, spending an inordinate amount of time talking through how to create bios. I agree, that's an important consideration, but it doesn't warrant the better part of an entire chapter. There's also a lot of time spent on discussing how to network within the art industry. Again, another worthy topic, but the details were far too basic. For example, there's a lot of discussion about how to convince a curator to take 15 minutes to have coffee with you, but very little time spent reviewing other industry specific networking opportunities. Another example of "light" information was the time spent suggesting you chat with your local art gallery owners about possible representation. Another instance of common sense stuff that focused more on the "what" and not enough on the "how".

This book struck me as very basic and lacked much punch. If you're looking for very broad strokes, and/or are fresh out of school, I can understand a higher rating for the content. But if you're looking for a real business savvy perspective, continue your search.

Don't wait around for success--make it come to you!

Brainard Carey is that rarity in the art world: someone who knows how to sell himself without selling out. The key is Carey's imagination, perseverance, and genuine enthusiasm, which shine through this book. He offers the encouragement AND the practical advice that will help you move yourself and your art to wider exposure and real success. Unlike many other artists, he's not embarrassed about the concept of making money--in fact, artists are the ones who SHOULD be making the money! But there's no question that public and financial success requires you to put yourself out there, over and over. Artists MUST learn how to market themselves well--it has become part of the job of being an artist. And this is where Carey shines. It's not just what he says but how he says it; he's a great model for marketing yourself while BEING yourself. Although I'm a musician, not a visual artist, after a friend recommended this book I was inspired to launch a Kickstarter.com campaign to make an album--and I raised over $6,000! Carey's words helped get me off my rear. I recommend this book to artists of ALL types.

Not Just a Pretty Face

My name is Shelley Ellis, and ever since I got a digital camera, I knew there was more I could do with it than just shoot pictures of pretty flowers. Then, I discovered the world of digital art. I was in awe, like seeing the works of Picasso or Dali for the first time. However, like those great artists, they seemed magical and unattainable...that is until I found Susan Tuttle's book, Digital Expressions.

Seriously, I am not at all exaggerating when I say that she combines the best of both of these worlds. Her book could simply be thumbed through and enjoyed by viewing the stunning digital art inside, but the best part is her clear and concise, step-by-step instructions so YOU can create your own piece of art based on the sample. And I truly do mean clear and understandable instructions. As a retired teacher, I know how to give instructions in small steps - so a 2nd grader can follow them - and Susan (a former teacher herself!) does an excellent job of foreseeing and explaining any trouble spots or questions that may come up along the way.

The first 20 pages of Digital Expressions are devoted to a review of how to use Photoshop Elements. Susan says it's not to be used as a replacement for the instruction manual...but, if you're like me, you probably never really took the time to actually read through the entire manual. Or if you did, after a while it all ran together. The first 20 pages in Digital Expressions made it all clear to me. I especially loved her yellow "Digital Detail" boxes where she highlights information or tips that come in particularly handy.

Oh! Just in case all of this isn't enough... Susan is generous enough to include a CD with the book loaded with images to get you started and help you along the way. I am so happy I bought this book. It's just exactly what I needed with 25 different project ideas such as: altering vintage photos, giving photos a hand tinted look, creating sweet realistic looking drawings, adding words to images, layers of backgrounds, photo montages....and so much more!

Author shows you how you can create ART WITH PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS!

The book is more inspirational in ideas than a very detailed book of projects.

I like this author a lot and she does provide instructions in her book.

I just wish it had more ideas for projects in it.

This will not deter me from getting any of her other books.

If you want to know what Photoshop Elements can do outside the realm of just fixing photos- this book is worth buying for that purpose.

YOU CAN CREATE ART with PSE- but most users are unaware of how to do that.
Tuttle shows exactly what you can do with some guidance and your own imagination.

Secrets Revealed

One hit wonder? Not a chance! Susan's second book on creating digital art and she's out done her first book in so many ways! Not only is her second book filled to the brim with detailed lesson after lesson, but the quality of the book itself is amazing. From the page design and layout to the quality of the paper. I can be a bit obsessive about how a book "feels" as well, and this is top notch.

Five chapters with 25 lessons in how to deconstruct the amazing pieces of art that I've admired in magazines and books for years. Being someone that has been intimidated with Photoshop & Photoshop Elements in the past, Susan has laid out step by step instructions that even the hesitant can appreciate. If it wasn't enough that the step by step instructions are simple to follow, she's included a CD full of photos and textures so you don't have to worry about having the "right" picture in your personal stash.

I know I'm gushing here, but I've always been in awe of these types of manipulated photographs and am now able to produce my own. Susan's teaching her secrets this Fall at Valley Ridge Art Studio ([...]) in Wisconsin and I cannot wait to meet her in person and dig deeper in to the art of digital art.

About the Author
Mary Lynch Barbera, Ph.D., RN, BCBA-D, is a Registered Nurse and a doctoral level Board Certified Behavior Analyst. From 2003-2010, she was the lead Behavior Analyst for the Pennsylvania Verbal Behavior Project studying the effect of Verbal Behavior Techniques in classrooms throughout the State of Pennsylvania. Barbera was the founding President of the Autism Society of America's Berks County Chapter, has worked with hundreds of children on the autism spectrum, and has extensive experience training a variety of professionals. She is the mother of a son with autism. Tracy Rasmussen is an award-winning journalist of over 25 years with a specialty in medical reporting. She has been a frequent speaker for the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill on issues of mental health.

Great book

I really enjoy this book. Easily read and understood with the process it was written and helps gain insight to the communication of non-verbal children. Originally checked it out at the library, but after reading it, knew it would be handy to have for any reinforcement or reminder of how to beat serve 'non-verbal' children. Have recommended it several times to others in the DDA field.

Guidance for a willing but lost mom

Thank you for this book. In this new world of autism my family has entered, with so many unfamiliar terms and suggestions, this book has really helped me to make some sense of what our son needs and the therapy he is receiving. Im better able now to make relevant steps in administering his home therapy and helping him throughout the day.

Excellent book. It's very easy to read

Excellent book. It's very easy to read, the author uses terminology, but explains and breaks it down very well. I have read a lot of books regarding this topic and felt like this book is one I will refer to if needed. Other books, I have had a hard time understanding terminology I am unfamiliar with. This book is great for using terminology and being able to apply the knowledge. I would highly recommend this book to those looking for a way to apply ABA.

contemporary guardian-ward romance

Heroine has been in love with her guardian Hero since she was 15 & set out to make him notice her as a woman since she became his ward at 17. Unfortunately he didn't see her as a potential lover & even sent his various girlfriends-of-the-moment to vacation with her instead of taking him herself. The one time he did take her himself ended up with heroine declaring her love for him & proved to be embarrassing for both of them. Now at age 19 heroine is resigned that Hero would never see her as a lover. She wants to be independent from him now instead of waiting 2 more years before she has full legal control of her inheritance. But Hero doesn't think she's capable of protecting herself from fortune hunters so he proposes a marriage of convenience until she's 21. Heroine takes advantage of their temporary marriage & tries to make him love her. Her plan seems to work especially when Hero finally makes love to her. But the reappearance of Hero's old girlfriend instills doubt re: the permanence of their marriage.

Heroine may sound like a doormat but she wasn't. She just knew what she wanted & went for it. It showcased her inner strength (her stubbornness, resilience, & positive view of problems) to not be discouraged by Hero's lack of interest in her as a lover for the 2 years she lived with him as his ward & the 1st year of their marriage. She wasn't self-pitying. When she gave her best shot at something & it didn't work out, she moved on to her next plan.

I liked that we get both Hero & heroine's POVs. I could clearly see where their misunderstandings were & rooted for them to figure them out at some point. I liked that Hero chose to be celibate during the 2nd year as heroine's guardian b/c he was done with his casual-sex lifestyle. He didn't stray during their 1st year of their celibate marriage either. Once he realized he was in love with her, he tried his best to win her love. He was a sweetheart of an alpha Hero.

So, I chose this book because it had a "marriage of convenience" storyline.

I must say that I found the book to be just ok.

I first felt sorry for the female character, because she had lost her parents at a young age and was stuck with a grandparent that was overly critical about any and everything she did, and just really didn't want her around, and therefore, requested that the make character take over the raising of the girl as a teenager. But then as the story went on (years passing) the female character really got on my nerves with all the unnecessary bad behavior, whining, and misunderstood communication with the male character.

With the male character I first applauded him for taking on the care of the female character, and again as time when on, I didn't quite understand how he could misunderstand some of her actions, as well as be bad with his communication, considering he was a successful business man.

As I said above this book was in my opinion just ok.
