Understanding Popular Science (Issues in Cultural and Media Studies (Paperback)), by Peter Broks

Science is a defining feature of the modern world, and popular science is where most of us make sense of that fact. Understanding Popular Science provides a framework to help understand the development of popular science and current debates about it. In a lively and accessible style, Peter Broks shows how popular science has been invented, redefined and fought over. From early-nineteenth century radical science to twenty-first century government initiatives, he examines popular science as an arena where the authority of science and the authority of the state are legitimized and challenged. The book includes clear accounts of the public perception of scientists, visions of the future, fears of an anti-science movement and concerns about scientific literacy. The final chapter proposes a new model for understanding the interaction between lay and expert knowledge. This book is essential reading in cultural studies, science studies, history of science and science communication.

The Oz Factors: The Wizard of Oz as an Analogy to the Mysteries of Life, by Lawrence R. Spencer

Our humanity has long since been exceeded by the power of the wicked witches of science and government to destroy all life with nuclear weapons, alter our DNA and control our minds with psychotropic drugs and our lives with media lies. Our thoughts and conjectures about life and the universe are often based on assumptions, unproven theories, hearsay, rumors and misinformation. Decisions we make in life may be based on ancient attitudes and archaic practices. There are 12 common denominators that prevent observation, understanding, and workable solutions to problems of existence. How do each of these "Oz Factors" influence our history, science, philosophy, our lives and our future? We can chose our own Yellow Brick Road. We can pull back the curtain of rhetoric and dogma. We can build a better Emerald City for ourselves and our children. Do you really want to go back to Kansas?

A must read for all citizens of Earth! --Shirely Cage

From the Publisher
LOGIC IN THE LAND OF OZ

"Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas any more. We must be over the rainbow!"--Dorothy from 'The Wizard of Oz'

What if you were in Dorothy's shoes? First, you run away from home to save your dog from being destroyed by the sheriff. Then, you get amnesia from being knocked on the head by a window frame. Next, you're swept up by a storm and carried far away from home. Finally, you crash-land in an alien world.

How would you feel?

Many of us, like Dorothy in 'The Wizard of Oz', feel as though we have crash-landed far, far from our own, personal home; far away from the place in our hearts or in our dreams where everything is just exactly the way we want it to be; a place where there is no trouble. We don't quite know what happened to our home or how we ended up where we are now, but we have a vague, fleeting feeling, that our home is still there, waiting for us to come back.

Is there really such a place?

Is it just a dream?

If such a place exists, how do we get there from here?

Who are we?

How did we get here?

Where is here?

These are primordial questions--the original, fundamental questions about the mysteries of life and universes which have existed since the beginning of time.

One method of figuring out the answers to questions is to compare an unknown subject to one that is similar, but already known. The comparison of two similar things is called an analogy. Storytelling, teaching, explaining things to young children, and scientific research all use analogies as a tool for better understanding.

Thus we begin our journey into "The Wizard of Oz" as an Analogy to the Mysteries of Life.

From the Author

Where are the hidden traces left by the Gods?" Rig Veda, Book I,

Review of The Oz Factors
By Robert W. Johnson
The purpose of this book is to give a reader some guidelines in a quest to solve the mysteries of life. In my opinion, it serves that purpose well. Each of the 12 Oz factors represents a "common denominator of Western Logic which prevents observation, understanding, and the attainment of workable solutions to the problems of human origin and existence." Further, the author states, "The allegorical story of The Wizard of Oz and its timeless characters is an appropriate vehicle through which to learn more about the mysteries of life." If you read the book, I think you will agree. The learning of philosophical principles is thereby made not only easier, but actually delightful.
Here are a few of the Oz factors, to whet your appetite for the others:
Missing Information: Most real thinkers would agree that a valid concept of any subject that all information pertinent to it be available. But, study of almost any subject reveals not only that there are missing pieces to the puzzle, but that often the pieces are missing because vested interests (another Oz factor) have deliberately withheld them from the public.
Assumptions: Every theory presented by so-called authorities in science, religion, politics, etc contains one or more assumptions. If the assumption is false, the theory crashes. And so we suspect that the reason why assumptions are rarely listed is that their presence would expose the weaknesses in the view being advanced.
Source of Information: Many sources of information like to "play God", promoting unquestioning belief in their views. Example from Science: "We're smart and you're not, so just accept what we say." Example from Religion: "We're holy and you're not, so just accept what we say." They need to be told, "Curb your dogma!"
False Information: Investigation shows that many sources deliberately put out false information, for reasons related to the benefit of the organization they support. To quote the author: "Lies replace the truth when a vested interest is being served."
I could go on with praises for this book, but space won't permit it. Bottom line: If you want to be a clearer thinker and a more successful searcher for truth, you will do well to read this book.

Pointing out the truth behind the cover story
By pmgeorgic
This is a book that you will pick up and read again and again. The topics are fed to you slowly and then you are hit with the cold hard truth, that the public has been duped on every side. For those of you who wish to share the truth, this is a great reference book of material for conversation that can become explosive. I have the book close to me most of the time. This is one to own and keep reading as time goes on. There are more and more areas of reality to address then anyone has ever realized or cares to observe in most cases.. Few know the truth or even wish to accept the truth. Life is not always as it seems.

Mandatory reading for all citizens of Earth!
By DeDee Cage
This is an incredible book that will open your eyes to the real history of mankind, the current precarious conditions of our world's ecology, economy, and social structures under the influence of the powerful and oppresive vested interests, and the propaganda machines they control and use so well.
I could not put this book down as Lawrence Spencer gave me a history lesson unlike any I ever had before. And even as I was being amazed by this tapestry of the history and development of the educational, medical, pharmaceutical, banking, government and military organizations of our world, it was the combined impact of their effects on our planetary environment, the health, sanity, and freedom of all beings that changed my viewpoint forever. I was so shocked that it took this book to draw back the curtains of illusion and make the truth so evident that I had to admit to an old, nagging apprehension that things were not quite as they appeared or were being "officially" presented to be.
The author's humor and wit kept me glued to this story, and the analogy of "The Wizard of Oz" to these frightening mysteries of life made the vast scope of this work magically comprehensible. He even exposes the simplicity of how to handle our information overload so that we can actually see and determine for ourselves just what is actaully going on "in the merry old land of Oz" so we can act to help create a meaningful future on this planet. I foresee this book as a major motivation for increased global awareness and social responsibility that will rejuvenate our hopes for the future generations with positive and effective actions taken now.

Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community, by Robert D. Putnam

Once we bowled in leagues, usually after work; but no longer. This seemingly small phenomenon symbolizes a significant social change that Robert Putnam has identified and describes in this brilliant volume, "Bowling Alone." Drawing on vast new data from the Roper Social and Political Trends and the DDB Needham Life Style -- surveys that report in detail on Americans' changing behavior over the past twenty-five years -- Putnam shows how we have become increasingly disconnected from family, friends, neighbors, and social structures, whether the PTA, church, recreation clubs, political parties, or bowling leagues. Our shrinking access to the "social capital" that is the reward of communal activity and community sharing is a serious threat to our civic and personal health. Putnam's groundbreaking work shows how social bonds are the most powerful predictor of life satisfaction. For example, he reports that getting married is the equivalent of quadrupling your income and attending a club meeting regularly is the equivalent of doubling your income. The loss of social capital is felt in critical ways: Communities with less social capital have lower educational performance and more teen pregnancy, child suicide, low birth weight, and prenatal mortality. Social capital is also a strong predictor of crime rates and other measures of neighborhood quality of life, as it is of our health: In quantitative terms, if you both smoke and belong to no groups, it's a close call as to which is the riskier behavior. A hundred years ago, at the turn of the last century, America's stock of social capital was at an ebb, reduced by urbanization, industrialization, and vast immigration thatuprooted Americans from their friends, social institutions, and families, a situation similar to today's. Faced with this challenge, the country righted itself. Within a few decades, a range of organizations was created, from the Red Cross, Boy Scouts, and YWCA to Hadassah and the Knights of Columbus and the Urban League. With these and many more cooperative societies we rebuilt our social capital. We can learn from the experience of those decades, Putnam writes, as we work to rebuild our eroded social capital. It won't happen without the concerted creativity and energy of Americans nationwide. Like defining works from the past that have endured -- such as "The Lonely Crowd" and "The Affluent Society" -- and like C. Wright Mills, Richard Hofstadter, Betty Friedan, David Riesman, Jane Jacobs, Rachel Carson, and Theodore Roszak, Putnam has identified a central crisis at the heart of our society and suggests what we can do.

Amazon.com Review
Few people outside certain scholarly circles had heard the name Robert D. Putnam before 1995. But then this self-described "obscure academic" hit a nerve with a journal article called "Bowling Alone." Suddenly he found himself invited to Camp David, his picture in People magazine, and his thesis at the center of a raging debate. In a nutshell, he argued that civil society was breaking down as Americans became more disconnected from their families, neighbors, communities, and the republic itself. The organizations that gave life to democracy were fraying. Bowling became his driving metaphor. Years ago, he wrote, thousands of people belonged to bowling leagues. Today, however, they're more likely to bowl alone: Television, two-career families, suburban sprawl, generational changes in values--these and other changes in American society have meant that fewer and fewer of us find that the League of Women Voters, or the United Way, or the Shriners, or the monthly bridge club, or even a Sunday picnic with friends fits the way we have come to live. Our growing social-capital deficit threatens educational performance, safe neighborhoods, equitable tax collection, democratic responsiveness, everyday honesty, and even our health and happiness. The conclusions reached in the book Bowling Alone rest on a mountain of data gathered by Putnam and a team of researchers since his original essay appeared. Its breadth of information is astounding--yes, he really has statistics showing people are less likely to take Sunday picnics nowadays. Dozens of charts and graphs track everything from trends in PTA participation to the number of times Americans say they give "the finger" to other drivers each year. If nothing else, Bowling Alone is a fascinating collection of factoids. Yet it does seem to provide an explanation for why "we tell pollsters that we wish we lived in a more civil, more trustworthy, more collectively caring community." What's more, writes Putnam, "Americans are right that the bonds of our communities have withered, and we are right to fear that this transformation has very real costs." Putnam takes a stab at suggesting how things might change, but the book's real strength is in its diagnosis rather than its proposed solutions. Bowling Alone won't make Putnam any less controversial, but it may come to be known as a path-breaking work of scholarship, one whose influence has a long reach into the 21st century. --John J. Miller

From Publishers Weekly
"If you don't go to somebody's funeral, they won't come to yours," Yogi Berra once said, neatly articulating the value of social networks. In this alarming and important study, Putnam, a professor of sociology at Harvard, charts the grievous deterioration over the past two generations of the organized ways in which people relate to one another and partake in civil life in the U.S. For example, in 1960, 62.8% of Americans of voting age participated in the presidential election, whereas by 1996, the percentage had slipped to 48.9%. While most Americans still claim a serious "religious commitment," church attendance is down roughly 25%-50% from the 1950s, and the number of Americans who attended public meetings of any kind dropped 40% between 1973 and 1994. Even the once stable norm of community life has shifted: one in five Americans moves once a year, while two in five expect to move in five years. Putnam claims that this has created a U.S. population that is increasingly isolated and less empathetic toward its fellow citizens, that is often angrier and less willing to unite in communities or as a nation. Marshaling a plentiful array of facts, figures, charts and survey results, Putnam delivers his message with verve and clarity. He concludes his analysis with a concise set of potential solutions, such as educational programs, work-based initiatives and funded community-service programs, offering a ray of hope in what he perceives to be a dire situation. From Library Journal
Putnam (Stanfield Professor of International Peace, Harvard) probes American history to identify, interpret, and weigh the forces influencing the major drop in civic involvement that characterized American society in the last third of the 20th century. Buttressing his arguments with a wide range of resources, references, and statistics from government, academic, and commercial sources, he explores the roles of generational, social, and technological factors as they relate to the dwindling of our nation's social capital. Putnam argues that "[the level of] social connectedness matters to our lives in the most profound way." How to respond to its current nadir? Putnam finds striking parallels between the situation today and the declining levels of social interaction in the late 1800s. He cites the rejuventating waves of change and reform generated during the Progressive Era, which stemmed that earlier decline, and suggests that a comparable burst of social inventiveness and political reform could activate the much-needed rebuilding of civic involvement and social connection in our time. This substantive and stimulating work is highly recommended for academics and a thoughtful general public audience.

The Original Mainstream Work On The Erosion Of Community; So Successful It's Not Necessary To Read
By Charles
This is a famous book, but “Bowling Alone” was not what I expected. What I expected was social commentary. What I got was social science, proving with reams of statistics what is now a commonplace, that social capital in America has eroded massively over the past several decades. Of course, that it’s a commonplace is due largely to this book, published in 2000 as a follow-up to a 1995 article, so that’s hardly a criticism of the book. But, paradoxically, it’s not clear that most readers nowadays will get much value, by itself, out of reading this very valuable book.

That’s not to say readers can’t get much value out of this book. But to do so today, you have to evaluate the data it provides with frameworks it doesn’t provide. I found that reading this book while keeping in mind some of the insights provided by Yuval Levin’s recent “A Fractured Republic” helped me better understand the causes of the decline in social capital. In particular, Levin notes that after World War II, Americans have become increasingly individualistic, in a rebound effect from prior consolidation, which helps explain the trends Putnam documents.

Putnam begins by convincingly demonstrating that the same pattern of erosion of social capital has occurred in nearly every area of American life. That pattern is, basically, an increase in participation (and resultant social capital) at the beginning of the 20th Century; an even greater increase in participation after World War II; and a precipitous fall-off from roughly 1970 through the 1990s. He demonstrates that this is true of all forms of political participation, civic participation, religious participation, workplace interactions, informal social connections, volunteering and philanthropy, and mutual trust.

After proving this erosion to his, and the reader’s, satisfaction, Putnam tries to figure out why this has happened. He carefully parses various possibilities, from increased pressures for time and money, women entering the work force, suburbanization, TV and the Internet, generational change and others. He concludes there is no single culprit and each of these has some responsibility, although TV is the largest driver. Putnam considers only materialist drivers and does not consider philosophical shifts in American thought, probably because those would be difficult to capture in social science surveys (although it seems to me it could be done, by asking about opinions, rather than activities, while keeping in mind that such self-reporting is subject to all sorts of biases and inaccuracies).

Putnam does an excellent job of sub-analyzing the data he presents. For example, he is careful to distinguish trends across generations from those occurring within generations (generally, intra-generational trends are swamped by inter-generational trends—in other words, it’s the younger generations in which social capital is actually eroding). He is also careful to note where the data is uncertain, and to avoid sweeping conclusions. And he makes interesting distinctions that are relevant to his arguments, such as between bridging social capital, that creates new connections among disparate people, and bonding social capital, that creates tighter social connections among people with something in common.

Finally, Putnam optimistically lays out a program for restoring social capital, analogizing the current age to the late 19th Century Gilded Age and, among other things, citing Booth Tarkington’s laments about the decline of social capital in the early 20th Century as evidence, given the increase in social capital later in the 20th Century, that the pattern can be reversed. Putnam’s specific suggestions are not very detailed—they are couched as, for example, “Let us find ways to ensure that by 2010 significantly more Americans will participate in (not merely consume or ‘appreciate’) cultural activities from group dancing to songfests to community theater to rap festivals.” How this is to be done Putnam does not really say, other than to claim that “top-down versus bottom-up” is a false dichotomy—“the roles of national and local institutions in restoring American community need to be complementary.”

But the problem here is that top-down actions have been a major cause of the problem of eroding social capital, and one that Putnam mostly ignores, since he assigns causal value exclusively to bottom-up causes. Long before Putnam, commentators noted that the growth of the Leviathan state was crowding out intermediary institutions of the type whose decline Putnam decries. In 1953, Robert Nisbet pointed this out, though he did it qualitatively, not with Putnam’s quantitative approach. Nisbet noted that as Leviathan grows, as it did from Progressive times on but most of all starting in the 1960s, intermediary institutions decay, since people seek meaning, and when they cannot obtain meaning on the local level, they will turn to national meaning, thus strengthening the central state (while obtaining only counterfeit meaning).

Similarly, this year (2016), Yuval Levin (who extensively cites Putnam) noted that “As the national government grows more centralized, and takes over the work otherwise performed by mediating institutions—from families and communities to local governments and charities—individuals become increasingly atomized; and as individuals grow apart from one another, the need for centralized government provision seems to grow.” Moreover, “In liberating many individuals from oppressive social constraints, we have also estranged many from their families and unmoored them from their communities, work and faith. In accepting a profusion of options in every part of our lives to meet our particular needs and wants, we have also unraveled the institutions of an earlier era, and with it the public’s broader faith in institutions of all kinds.” Levin points both to the expansion of government and to a widespread acceptance of “expressive individualism” as causes for the erosion in social capital.

These are the type of framework insights Putnam does not provide, and they suggest that government may be the problem, or a large part of it. That’s not to say that the national government is unable to help with the decline in social capital, but it is to say that its nature is not best suited to that role, and recognizing its culpability in the erosion of social capital is necessary to properly analyze the problem. Similarly, it’s important to recognize philosophical shifts in Americans themselves.

In fact, at no point does Putnam assign blame to government action as a possible base cause for the national decline in social capital (although government actions, such as splitting Indianapolis with an interstate, do occasionally figure in anecdotes). The huge increase in government scope and power that began in the 1960s is exactly coterminous with the drop in social capital that Putnam documents. That, by itself, proves nothing. But it’s at least a coincidence that is worth addressing, and Putnam doesn’t. Government, in fact, figures nearly not at all in Putnam’s book, other than indirectly, with respect to individuals’ reduced civic engagement in the political process. In my mind, this blind spot is the biggest defect of Putnam’s book.

That said, I am less convinced by a related frequent criticism of Putnam’s argument—that he ignores modern reasons why Americans might choose to be less politically involved, such as the perception both on the Left and the Right that the system is “rigged.” The supporters of Bernie Sanders point to the political power of the rich and connected; conservatives point to the federal government’s, and particularly the Supreme Court’s, seizing of power that used to be devolved to the local level, where individuals could have an impact. But if you think about it for a little while, those things may be true, and they may affect civic engagement in politics, but they say little about areas of social capital other than political involvement, such as religious involvement and workplace interaction. Therefore, this seems like a weak criticism, although attractive to those who view the world solely or largely through a political lens.

Putnam has written books since this one, including a recent one on income immobility which seems like it might be very interesting. I’m curious if there is data from the past fifteen years on the trends that Putnam addresses. While “Bowling Alone” does have a website, most of the links in it don’t work, which is too bad. If he hasn’t already, it’d be great if Putnam updated some of his data from this book, and let us know if his analysis and conclusions have changed.

For example, Putnam notes that non-privatized (i.e., public) religious belief is the single largest driver of social capital. How has the modern tendency away from religious belief, accelerating since 2000, affected social capital? And, of course, this book was written before the rise of social media (although Putnam does discuss Internet social activity in some detail, as it existed when the book was written, including its impact on reducing constraints of simultaneous timing on communication, and the “poverty of social cues” in Internet communication). How has the utter dominance of Facebook and similar media affected social capital? These, and many similar questions, would be worth answering.

So, while Putnam’s conclusions have, I think, been very valuable for society, I’m not sure that actually reading this book is necessary or valuable for most people. But if you are very interested in the topic, and read this in conjunction with other works, it may well be worth your time, even today.

Absolutely classic and still highly relevant
By Geoffrey B.
Bowling Alone has risen to the status of "classic" in rather few years to attain that distinction. Putnam saw -- and understood -- things happening in American culture that, when he wrote it, no one else seemed to have focused on. Sure, people would write articles in the popular press about how lodges were going under for lack of members, and community activities seemed to have become a thing of the past, but no one had pulled it together into a comprehensive -- and very readable -- analysis and, as far as I can tell, absolutely nailed it.

I see this book cited continually in articles and books in a wide variety of fields that attempt to understand contemporary America. As I watch the Trump phenomenon unfolding, I am wondering when someone will astutely draw the connection between the phenomena Putnam analyzes and the current political scene.

It's a classic, and you need to read it if you have not.

When Social Commentary is Overwhelmed by Stats and Verbiage
By Michael Griswold
Robert Putnam has something very important to say that I think would be of interest to any American whether in a small town or a big city. Putnam is making the case that Americans are less civically engaged then they were a generation or two previous and that this disengagement is troubling for the health and functioning of American society. This idea is nothing remarkable, just turn on your television and watch the news and hear about the violence in this country. There seems to be a general lack of respect for the value of human life these days and this disconnection could potentially be explained in part by our declining sense of community outlined by Putnam in Bowling Alone.

The problem is that Putnam’s core thesis of declining civic engagement being problematic for American society is buried underneath an admittedly impressive array of figures and statistics that left a man that has a Master’s Degree befuddled at times. This opens up a bigger problem, it is a dense and heavy slog that while fine as a academic work, may not make its’ way into the hands of the people who could really use the information to affect change within their community. Not everyone is blessed to have had access to the book smarts that I have, nor should we believe that a bunch of academics are going to be the saviors of the world. Street smarts and community knowledge are going to be needed just as much as academics to deal with this problem.

While other reviewers have brought up the validity issue of some or all of the measures of social engagement that Putnam uses, I am more sympathetic because it is a difficult concept to measure. Bowling Alone was for me a very sobering analysis that made me reconsider the things in my own personal life and if a book can do that, than it is obviously quite valuable. I just wish that I didn’t have to wade through 411 pages of verbose prose and stats to have this sobering wake up call.

Nice collection of first part of Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck
By Rhonda
I collect comics and I ordered this as a Christmas present for someone who also enjoys comics. The book was not wrapped in plastic, so I was able to read through it in order to write this review before giving the gift. The book was only available in hardcover when I purchased it. The book is beautiful and the colors and text are bold and sharp. The book cover is blue inside.

"Preface" is a 1 page intro to the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck story. It mostly discusses how Rosa tried to incorporate Carl Barks' account of Scrooge McDuck's early life into the Life and Times.

Pages 9-144 of this book contain the first part of the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck (the story was in Uncle Scrooge #285-296). Chronologically, the prequel to the story is Uncle Scrooge #297; this chapter is not part of the original story.

"Behind the Scenes" discusses the chapters of the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck in greater detail. It gives more information on how and why certain things happened, and some trivia/ facts about how the story was written.

"This Should Cover It All!" contains 10 full-page pieces of art done by Rosa between 1992-1994. These are covers for Barks classics, other projects and special art pieces.

" The Life and Times of Don Rosa: The Buckaroo of the Biography" is a 2 page biography discussing how Rosa worked with Disney Comics and Gladstone on the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck.

I've also attached a couple of photos of the book, including the table of contents.

Before I ordered this book, I looked all over online for details about what was in this book and I could not find any information beyond "maybe part of Life and Times". So I hope this review will be helpful to you.

One of the Best Don Rosa Volumes Ever
By Beerad
Excellent copy. This version is a compliment to the smaller books put out some years ago reflecting 12 issues of Scrooge McDucks Life. It also chronicles some of the missing pieces in the large format hard copy "Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck by Carl Barks, published in the mid-1980's.
Worth having and certainly worth reading.

Black Whole is a fluid collection of thoughts distilled into poetic form by Jashua Sa-Ra. It is a cultural healing aid offered to stimulate, encourage, and empower. As suggested by the title, it has an immense gravity that is honed to bring community together. Love (or the lack thereof) is the central theme, spanning inter- and intrapersonal, familial, communal, spiritual, and global relationships. Thomas Aquinas on God and Evil, by Brian Davies

Brian Davies offers the first in-depth study of Saint Thomas Aquinas's thoughts on God and evil, revealing that Aquinas's thinking about God and evil can be traced through his metaphysical philosophy, his thoughts on God and creation, and his writings about Christian revelation and the doctrines of the Trinity and the Incarnation.

Davies first gives an introduction to Aquinas's philosophical theology, as well as a nuanced analysis of the ways in which Aquinas's writings have been considered over time. For hundreds of years scholars have argued that Aquinas's views on God and evil were original and different from those of his contemporaries. Davies shows that Aquinas's views were by modern standards very original, but that in their historical context they were more traditional than many scholars since have realized.

Davies also provides insight into what we can learn from Aquinas's philosophy. Thomas Aquinas on God and Evil is a clear and engaging guide for anyone who struggles with the relation of God and theology to the problem of evil.

Review

"Regardless of what one thinks of Aquinas' approach to philosophy and theology, Davies provides an important and approachable (non-technical) synthesis of Aquinas' view on God and evil that should not be ignored by the contemporary student of apologetics."
--Christian Apologetics Journal

"Davies's book shows that philosophers cannot uncritically enlist Thomas Aquinas as a foot soldier in this argument about God and evil, on one side or the other." --The Thomist

"Brian Davies offers a vigorous, even brilliant, accessible overview of Thomas Aquinas on God, good, and evil. A leading expert on Aquinas, Davies has produced a book that will engage scholars as well as students and educated readers. This is a bold contribution to the literature on the problem of evil, the philosophy of religion, and the history of ideas."
-- Charles Taliaferro, Professor of Philosophy, St. Olaf College

"this is an excellent book by an undisputed mater of the material...highly recommended."--CHOICE

"This is a tremendous little text. It is eminently readable and substantive, clear and efficient but not superficial....this friendly volume would be an excellent read for anyone - philosopher, theologian, the fabled interested lay reader - looking for a inviting primer on the towering doctor of the Roman church."--Philosophy and Theism

"This is a game-changing book."--American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly

Clear, accessible account of Aquinas’s thinking on God and evil
By Artes
Davies book is a clearly written, economical explication of Aquinas’s thoughts on God and evil. He takes up passages and arguments from all over Aquinas’s corpus and gathers them together into a systematic account. It’s very accessible and packs a lot into a short book (it’s about 130 pages, not including the footnotes).

His goal is, I think, in large part to show how Aquinas might have addressed what is commonly called “the problem of evil”, that is “how can God–who is thought to be good, loving, omnipotent, omniscient, etc.–allow evil in the world?” As Davies presents it, Aquinas offers a convincing argument for why the existence of evil is not incompatible with the existence of a good, loving God.

He first has to spend some time clarifying and developing the philosophical machinery Aquinas uses (e.g. what is being, good, evil, cause, what can we know about God?) before addressing the major questions about God and evil. In doing so, he covers a lot of territory, making this a good introduction not just to Aquinas on God and evil but to Aquinas’s thought in general.

Davies says in the preface that he wants to “offer an account of Aquinas’s teachings on the topic of God and evil while trying to place him in the context of contemporary discussions”. It’s an account which is very different from those espoused in most contemporary discussions, and one well worth reading.

Good Introduction to God and Evil
By Kelly Pinella
The reason I found this book helpful is because it does a pretty good job presenting Davies' interpretation of Saint Thomas Aquinas' view on God and evil, although I have not studied Aquinas' view any further than casually reading his book, Summa Theologica Book One. Davies thinks that Aquinas' approach to God and evil is the correct one. Davies examines and explains both what Aquinas meant to say and what he did not mean to say. Davies compares Aquinas' view on things such as good and bad, existence and essence, and occurring naturally and occurring accidentally. "For something to have essence, Aquinas thinks, it actually has to exist." He helps the reader to understand certain terms Aquinas uses such as esse, actually existing without being the source of its being actual. The word 'malum' is used when making reference to evil or badness. Malum ponenae refers to evil suffered, and malum culpae refers to evil done, both of which are not directly caused by God. In my opinion, the book falls short on examining different types of bad, evil, and suffering, or rather, perhaps Aquinas fell short on examining various cases of bad, evil, and suffering. There is a type of suffering for righteousness that is done with all strength and joy, which is not explored at all. The concept of 'satan' and the 'devil' is not mentioned at all, which is quite odd when trying to talk about evil. It sounds as though Aquinas is extremely cautious not to belittle evil and what to do about it. However, in my opinion, we can't dance around evil or avoid tackling it head on. The emphasis is more on how God exists in spite of there being evil in the world, and that God does not cause evil directly, and that God is still the highest good. For anyone who wants a lot of good facts about God and evil, or anyone who wants to get a taste for Aquinas' view on the matter, this book is pretty good.

Author Brian Davies provides a large amount of interesting notes in the back 1/3 of the book. It is a good mix of sources, definitions, analysis, and opinions. This book is a good introduction to God and evil, but not necessarily how to handle it or what to do about it.
